    Calculate the amount of heat gained... (Calorimetry)

    By the chemical system of ammonium nitrate

    same hint:

    qrxn = - (qwater + qcalorimeter).

    The heat lost by the calorimeter water, qwater, depends on the specific heat of water, Csp and ΔT, while the heat lost by the calorimeter, qcalorimeter, depends on the heat capacity, cp and ΔT.

    Temperature initial 9.8 degrees celcius
    Temperature final 21.5 degrees celcius
    Mass water 25.086 Grams.
    Mass of ammonium nitrate(salt) 5.109 Grams.

    I was just taking another look at the problem... are you not given a Cp for the calorimeter? How are you supposed to calculate the heat lost by it if you don't have one? The addy is wearing off so I'm actually taking a logical look at this instead of just trying to shove numbers into the equation.

    Cp is not given, but Cp formula is total Joules/ Temperature Change.

    Q = m c ΔT

    Heat lost = heat gained

    Find your water equivalent for the ammonium nitrate

    plug dat chit in

    m(of water) c(of water) (Tf-Ti)= m(chemical) c(of chemical) (Tf-Ti)

    you know the mass of water
    you know its specific heat
    you know the initial temp (room temp ~26 C i think)
    you know the final temp because its the same as the final temp of the chemical
    you know the mass of the chemical
    you know the initial and final temp of the chemical

    you dont know the specific heat of the chemical but you know all the other values so plug and chug
    can plug c(of chemical) back into Q = m c ΔT for answer
    youre welcome
    come at me $10

    kinda sleepy but i think thats all right

    Q=MC(triangle/delta)T

    M=mass of water
    C=specific heat capacity (usually 4.18kj/mol)
    deltaT= temperature change
