Left arm much weaker than right

My left arm is extremely weaker than my right and it holds me back when I'm lifting. When using the dumbbells, I do uneven amounts. My friend says its a bad thing cus it will only make the difference in strength between my arms even greater. Does it really matter? Would it be better for me to lower the weights and feel nothing in my right arm just to make my left arm catch up?

Yes it matters, using different weights only serves to make the imbalance worse.
Your other arm will catch up eventually.

What if I'm weak to begin with, and now my right arm can't progress cus it has to wait for left arm

    Thats the point...
Why would you want to train one arm and leave the other to atrophy?
Strength should be even from left to right. Since it seems like you're pretty new to this, it really shouldn't take long for the other arm to catch up.
