People do abs everyday because a)they are easy to work out, most people don't really push themselves that hard, b)don't understand how abs are a result of body fat reduction and c)don't understand how muscle building works and thus incorrectly work them out everyday.

there is a lot of bad info out there too. when i was in the military, they would tell us you can't overdo abs or calves. something about the muscles being more dense and some other crap like that. saying they don't need the recovery time of all the others. That was and probably still is accepted as gospel...whatever.

I think some people do them everyday because the process of working them out keeps them "tight" and they like to look at themselves in the mirror and feel good about it.

When combined with other heavy "higher priority" training (personal preference) like legs and back I personally would not attempt to do abs more than 2x a week as that ab training will affect my lower back.

    Doesn't everybody?
"It doesn't matter what exercise you do, but man was made to move, to eat sparingly, to work hard and to screw as much as he can manage. Do all that, and you will look as good as your genes will let you, be content as the arseholes around you will allow, and maybe get a few screws. The particular virtues of weight training are in the discipline it brings to both mind and body, and, if you do it right, it will make you look good naked and do well what you got your clothes off to do." Becasue they've got nothing better to do...but seriously abs should be treated like any other muscle group!

    Question

I don't even bother with abs! They will cOme with lugging around heavy weight (any workout, SQUATS, any back, chest...ect) abs will show when your lean and need them to show, forget them showing when you got to much body fat, dosent work that way!

Because they're afraid of working out their lower backs? People are dumb. It's a muscle group just like anything else and needs to have brief periods of intense contraction (situps or whatever) and then long periods of rest. Just like all the other muscle groups.
Fat and weak, but getting better.

    1RMs as of 6/06/2012:

    Squat: 320
    Bench Press: 215
    Deadlift: 350
    Overhead Press: 120
    Weighted Chin: +50

    Feel free to friend me!

I do them every workout day not because I think I can spot reduce but for the same reason I toss in some curls on optional days - psychological. I feel like my abs are more defined and that my arms are "fuller". I don't crush them every day tho, usually 3 sets of abs at the beginning of a workout and 3 sets at the end. Just me tho...

You need to hit 10-11% before Abs show well bro.

    I asked a 5 x National bb'er this Q the other day.
    -80 kgs in 15 months.
    -100 kgs goal (75kgs bodyweight)

Abs on a skinny guy is like a fatgirl with big tits, it doesn't count.
