Should I add Casein to my diet?

Hi, I'm an 18 year old weight lifter, I lift just about everyday, very late, usually after 8pm, and go to bed about 2 hours or less after my workout. Currently, I take Jack3d as a pre-workout, ON Whey post workout and usually don't eat before bed with Animal Pak as my multi in the morning, which I plan on switching to Opti-men when I'm out because it is cheaper and less pills. Anyway, my question is would it be smart for me to get ON Casein and mix it with the Whey post workout? I'm trying to gain muscle mass and want to add that in. What would be my best bet? Casein in the morning? I'm asking this because I lift late so I'm not sure if Casein would be effective or not with the Whey protein. Any answer would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Regardless take Casein right before bed to prevent a catabolic state while you're sleeping. As I understand it: The larger molecule casein proteins take longer to break down so your body is therefore fueled for a longer period of time. Your body needs smaller molecule protein for quick absorption post workout so whey is perfect post. If we're talking about bulking up now were bringing extra carbs into the equation (see BSN's True Mass for example) this is a seperate topic however worthy of its own thread

It doesn't matter what protein source you choose as the main goal needs to be reaching your daily protein requirements. If you get a good deal on Casein go for it but otherwise you can just stick with the Whey protein.

Also I would suggest not going to Opti-Men as your multi. It is a poor quality multi-vitamin. Look into CL Orange Triad, NOW Foods ADAM or even Natures Way Whole Food Energizer.

Thanks for the replies, usually I eat dinner before my workout, wait a half hour, take a scoop of Jack3d, then wait another half hour and go to the gym, workout for two hours, come home, have a scoop of ON Whey with milk, and then go to bed two hours or so afterward. Just wondering if I should mix Casein protein into that time after I workout. If so, should I mix it with the Whey post workout? Or, right before bed, two hours or so after workout/Whey? Or should I be drinking a protein shake in the morning too? If so, whey or casein? Read so many different answers, I'm not sure which to go with.

No and No. Casein/Whey hit the blood stream at the same time, protein is protein is protein.

Just drink more milk, plenty of casein in there. Supplementing it externally isn't worth it, and it mixes horribly.

Lol Really?? Op please read the below article - we all should including myself

Search bb.com for "should I take casein or whey protein". Article is by eric satterwhite

This may help maximize your results more than a simple rely of "no"

Hope this at least gives you some added perspective in regard to the two proteins!

answer is no...unless of course you have a hard time meeting protein requirements and enjoy the nasty taste of casein...high quality whey protein and whey protein/casein blends are a top choice among athletes...casein is more of a trickle of amino acids and people use it around bed time to try and capitalize on higher levels of growth hormone and because the body is in a rested state...i've tried casein protein and didn't notice a difference whatsoever...myofusion has milk protein in it as well as different whey protein and egg protein and now they include rice protein in their enhanced probiotic formula...it's a perfect blend and there are a few good proteins out there other then Gaspari....i prefer Myofusion and Intrapro...it's personal preference but I like their formulas...

when i did drink it - it was like drinking cheese mixed in w/some nasty flavoring...stuff coated my stomach and i burped it up here and there...left a nasty taste in mouth b/c of all the burping...they should make a cheesecake flavor of it...might be easier for the flavoring guys to handle...

I add 1/2 cup cottage cheese to all my blended shakes for casein needs, and milk when bulking.
