Two completely different QB's you fcuking ruh-tard. Newton relies on the fact that he's a physical freak, alex relies on his smarts. brb economics degree with a 4.0 in 3 years.
Urban Meyer on Alex learning Playbooks: He is a guy that, until he understands it, he is nonfunctional," Meyer, who had just been hired at the University of Florida, said that year. "He is a guy that — I keep hearing how Brett Favre kind of makes something out of nothing and is a person that runs around to make a play. Alex Smith is not that kind of player. Alex Smith is a person that, once he is taught, he has to learn it all. But once he gets it, believe me, he gets it."
# of coordinators alex has had: 7 (including one of the worst OC's of all time Jim Hollister)
brb alex gets a full off season with a real coaching staff for the first time in his career, and his first time continuing with a REAL offensive minded head coach/OC

i dont understand how they could say he is a good qb after he had a mediocre season which equated to the best season of his career
he has always played like shiit, finally he plays okay, it doesn't mean he is good.
if he has the same exact season next year, statwise, i would still say he is a very mediocre quarterback and so would everyone else.I'm fukkin in, you're fukkin out!!

His mediocre season resulted in the 9th best QBR in the league. And he played with a gimpy Gore most of the season, a completely worthless Edwards, and a season ending injury to arguably his most reliable WR in week 4. I'm not sayin he's ever gonna be elite but he's clearly better than you're giving him credit for.

you're a clown who obviously watches very few 49er games.
The 49er franchise wrote the book on how to ruin a QB with raw talent who is a project. Give him zero weapons, have his coaches hate him, give him terrible offensive coordinators, and switch the OC's every year. Hell the 49ers Oline was probably in the bottom 10 until this year. This was THE FIRST TIME Alex Smith had a coach who was competant. Lets not forget Mike Nolan was a D level coach and was defensive minded. And Mike Singletary was possibly the worst Head coach in NFL history. Alex will only improve once he gets a full off season.
How is it even possible that a locker room tolerates a QB who played like trash his first 5 seasons....if this were any other team smith would have been called out by his teammates a long time ago. Even the 49er players know the coaches have been pathetic.

Eight million per year for Smith is a bargain for the 49ers. If smith had tested free agency he could've commanded much more on the market. Smith will never be popular with the average football fan as he doesn't put up Fantasy Football pick um stats. He just wins under Harbaugh. The only reason Smith and SF aren't hoisting the Lombardi trophy this year is because of Kyle Williams. Kyle Williams accounted for half the Giants points. The defense and offense did what they had to do to win the game, it was just Kyle's horrible plays cost them the game.

i actually watched pretty much every 9ers game because my roommate is a niners fan (bandwagon) and pretty much talks just like you
every time the niners win, niners fans everywhere say "finally alex smith is a great qb!", because naturally wins are usually attributed to a qb but then you look at his stats
just by looking at his game by game stats it seems he averaged probably 180-200 yards a game...and about 1-2 TDs a game. And looking at the teams, some of the worst secondaries in the league
the only argument for alex smith is that he doesn't throw interceptions
im not saying he completely sucks...he is just not very good...and hugely overrated by niners fans...in my opinionI'm fukkin in, you're fukkin out!!

Which goes to show how ****ty the receivers have been this year. This is the first time in his career that he's had any type of struggles in the red-zone. Part of it is the playcalling which also has been erratic(let's do an end-around in the rain) but this team literally fell off the wagon when Josh Morgan went down.Russell Wilson, the first QB in NFL history to throw a game-winning interception.

As a Giants fan, I will always be greatful for Smith knocking the Saints out of the playoff so we didn't have to go lose to them. I love you Alex Smith. If we win the SB, I might just buy an Alex Smith custom Giants jersey. The Giants should send him a SB ring too.

Are people seriously so trolled by calikid that they don't understand why it would be a smart idea for the 49ers to re-sign Alex Smith to a short contract?
I remember last year people were laughing that they even signed him for the one year deal and the result was pretty damn good.
Nothing wrong with giving him a small deal and yes, 8 mil a year isn't anything crazy when you look at some contracts given out lately. They have a young, raw kid sitting behind Alex who just needs time and he won't have to be rushed if he's not ready with Alex there.

Physically his potential was compared to Cam Newton's, his accuracy was dead-on, he had the fastest delivery in his draft class, fantastic mobility, strong arm, the only knocks on him were his funky windup and the need for him to sit and develop due to playing in a lesser conference and a Pistol type offense. He's in a perfect situation with the 49ers, being a backup on a winning team, allowed to sit back and learn much the same way that Aaron Rodgers was.

Not really, they didn't have many redzone opportunities last year and were better off percentage-wise, this season the bottom fell out which was a shock as no matter how many games they had lost in previous seasons, they were still typically about average in the red-zone, I think a combination of injury and "kid gloves" play-calling limited red-zone opportunities for them but if they want to be back in the hunt next season, that needs to improve because next year's schedule is no joke.Russell Wilson, the first QB in NFL history to throw a game-winning interception.
