Homegrown Texas Boy!
RIP Jack LaLanne - September 26, 1914 January 23, 2011
I remember as a young boy watching Jack Lalanne while my Grandmother worked out with him. Of course, the TV was black and white and the channels had to be changed manually.
Thanks to Jack, I recevied a good dose of fitness education at a very young age. I bet Jack knew that one day obesity would be America's largest killer.
Thanks Jack!

Doctors advised their patients to stay away from Jack's health club, a business totally unheard of at the time, and warned their patients that "LaLanne was an exercise 'nut,' whose programs would make them muscle-bound" and cause severe medical problems.
Wow...how far we've come...

It's all good Roy - Jack was a real hero and inspiration. A few more like him wouldn't hurt.

All I recall is that my mother used to watch his show when she was ironing.

I thoroughly enjoy watching old clips of his show on youtube. Time flies. It does seem like he passed away just recently. RIP.

Frank Sinatra vs. Jack Lalanne
When Frank Sinatra died, Jay Leno compared Sinatra's life to that of Jack Lalanne. They were the same age (one year difference). Jack Lalanne never smoked, never drank alcohol, never ate junk food, went to bed early, was loyal to the same woman. Frank Sinatra was the exact opposite to Jack Lalanne, i.e., boozer, smoker, womanizer, gambler. Jay Leno asked the question: "Whose life would you have wanted to live - Jack Lalanne or Frank Sinatra?"

Not to knock the legend, I wonder what it says when Ernest Borgnine is still alive and kicking and Jack is gone...

Yep, I think it all comes down to possbily genetics and maybe even a good dose of luck. Read about healthy people of all ages dropping dead for all sorts of reasons. And then you have the ones who drink, smoke, eat any garbage put on a plate, are 100+ lbs over weight and they live to be 100.

My nephew is involved in the film industry and had an assignment to go to someones house in L.A. and shoot a commercial for some guy making juicers.
So we're hanging out talking about it and he says "Yeah it was some old guy named Jack La Lanne". He thought Jack was pretty cool. He'd swim really hard or go in his gym and train like a madman then all of a sudden stop, lay down and sleep for about 20 minutes. He did this pretty much all day.
He told Ryan how good the juicer was so Ryan's thinking, cool he'll probably give me one. Jack goes "Kid, they work really good! Costco has them for a pretty good price, You oughtta pick one up."
Yes I'm 60 and no I'm not on HGH or Test
Abs are made in the gym and exposed in the kitchen.
Everything you do in the gym has a cost, but not everything necessarily has a benefit."

My nephew is an electrician (lighting) in Hollywood, and just finished a movie with Mr. Borgnine. Said he was one the nicest guys he has met yet "in the business."
Edit: Just saw Tommy's post. Crazy stuff (nephews).

Maybe long life is a reward from God for just being a good person? I don't recall there ever being anything negative posted about Ernest.

Saw a report on Yahoo! about aging and centenarians. They all seem to have suffered through the same illnesses as younger folks who had passed away. They just somehow managed to bounce back.
Researchers are studying their genetics and are finding specific genetic markers that centenarians have the rest of us don't.
But, it's easy to see that Jack LaLanne was able to maximise the amount of time his body would allow him to spend on this old planet. That's my goal and I certainly appreciate the lessons he taught.

I also think if someone stays active they have a better shot at living a long time. Some folks just sit around and get old and don't do $hit, you see these people & they look like they are 20+ yrs older than they actually are. Yet you have the ones out riding bicycles, hiking, kayaking, swimming, etc and they can be 70+ and yet look like they are 50.

On the other hand I wonder how much time Ernie spends in the hospital getting surgery and various other procedures, how many meds he's taking, etc.

x2.
When you get past a certain age, a run in with pneumonia that you'd shake off as a young buck could signal curtains for you. Even small things can lead to an untimely demise once you get old.
Be careful all you O35'ers.
