Have any of you ever taken a nutrition class? It seems that you are all are trying to reinvent the wheel by stating that calories are calories, and it doesn't matter if it's from ice cream, poptarts, big macs, fried chicken, or hotdogs as long as your macros are met you are doing a-okay. Does trans fat not matter? Does the difference in simple carbs vs complex carbs not matter??

it's the lazy approach. the gains won't be quite as lean but hey, I cant be bothered counting out all the calories let alone go through the trouble to break down meals into specific macro targets and then pile on the complex vs simple debate. seriously, how many people care that much? unless somebody is going to pay me for being cut up then I'll still say fukk it.
you also don't need to eat like absolute sh*t to do IIFYM's."on the bech press i usually start off with 205 doing it 5 times then once i ad my usual extra 5 pounds on i can barely do it twice. How can i increase my chest cardio? so i can rep heavy weight easier" -dc1992hp
come by and check out my log. I'm racing to a 275x5 bench and 185x3 strict press with comps.

iifym is more of a thing that lets you not be OCD about your diet. I don't give a **** if I eat candy during the day or ice cream, because in the grand scheme of things, as long as it's in moderation it won't have any negative effects on my body. there's no point in making sure everything you eat is "clean".. you can easily fit candy, ice cream, and soda into your diet whether you want to lose fat or gain muscle..
the problem is when everything you eat is junk food but it fits your macros.. you will probably notice health problems and less gains

stop hating on IIFYM then, its not IIFYMs fault (no wk).
also the difference between simple and complex carbs are very very small, the only difference really is the GI levels and how simple carbs (sugar) is worse for your teeth than complex carbs. Trans-fats matter yes but the amount of transfat eaten today is extremely small, its not served at mcdonalds and many other fast food restaurants.
edit: thats in terms of bodycomposition, not health wise, simple carb sources have very small amounts of micronutrients which could effect your workouts and energy levels therefore complex carbs are overall better, but eating simple carbs is alright aslong as you get micronutrients in your diet*Conspiracy Crew*

My nutrition class told me a calorie is a calorie and athletes only need 100 grams of protein at most per day. The teacher said all proteins are the same whether its from beef or beans and thats why everyone should be a vegetarian. True story. That's another why I don't Recommend going to purdue.

First, let me start off by saying all of my facts are from peer reviewed data.
The first point I want to counter is the first one that really struck me as I read through all of the responses. This is the point ConspiracyBrah made when he said "the only difference really is the GI levels and how simple carbs (sugar) is worse for your teeth than complex carbs."
This is horribly incorrect. A simple carb digests quickly and causes a rapid surge in your blood glucose level. This stimulates an over prodution of insulin by the pancreas. This, in turn, elevates plasma triaclyglycerol and accelerates fat synthesis. In addition to this, it may also reduce the body's sensitivity to insulin, causing your body to progressively need more and more insulin to optimize blood sugar levels. Eventually, this will lead to Type 2 diabetes.
As for what you eating having no effect on body composition, as KaOs stated, I have already begun debunking that, as simple carbs are proven to lead to fat synthesis in relation to the insulin surge.
Your diet should be primarily carbohydrates (~60%), followed by protein (~15-25%), then the rest of your calories from fat, or lipids. Lipids, carbohydrate, and proteins all serve a valuable purpose in your body's daily operations. With carbohydrates, you body will break down proteins and fats for energy. The breakdown of fats produces ketone bodies which, in excess, lead to an acidity referred to as ketosis. The excessive breakdown of protein stresses the liver and kidneys as it tries to cope with the deamination of the amine group and the excretion of urea, which can lead to dehydration among other things.

Oh really?
Do you also avoid eating protein for the same reason?
* One recent study compared the effects of two different meals on insulin. *One meal contained 21 grams of protein and 125 grams of carbohydrate. *The other meal contained 75 grams of protein and 75 grams of carbohydrate. *Both meals contained 675 calories. *Here is a chart of the insulin response:
