I don't see any reason why drinking coffee will decrease mass and strength. I read in men's health a couple of months back saying that coffee is one of the best foods to consume prior to a workout, don't know if its really true of not.

As long as you also drink plenty of water you are fine.

I don't think it does anything to decrease gains, but too much of it can run down your adrenals.

I read somewhere (someone posted it) that coffee has an oil in it that coats your intestines and blocks the absorbtion of nutrients. I would love it it someone had some info on this either way.

I don't know if any of these articles I found will answer any questions you had but I think they might be worth a look.

So far however I have looked at the Journal of the American Health Association and Journal of the American Dietetic Association and havent found anything dealing with coating the intestines...not to say it doesnt exist, but the info is hard to come by

Thanks so much Frosty! You're right, that kind of info is hard to come by. For some reason the oil thing just makes sense to me. As derek said, I doubt it would hinder your gains, but if it effects just 5% of your nutrients I would like to know.

I agree, it would be interesting to find out. I wonder if anyone has done testing on the effects of coffee on nutrient absorbtion...

some caffiene may actually be helpful as it increases calcium flux (possibly why studies have shown strength increases with caffiene supplementation). However too much caffiene may have a negative effect due to cellular dehydration. Caffiene is a mild diuretic and losing water out of the cell is involved in the catabolic signaling pathway... in other words... cells that experience a reduction in size are in effect "signaling" a starved state to the body... this is not good.

i read somewhere, i believe in a bb.com article, that most adults should have no more than 250mg of caffeine a day. However, I do know some caffeine is good for. Caffeine slows the breakdown of muscle glycogen, which means your body has more fuel to keep going. If you drink the coffee for the caffeine switch to some caffeine tabs or even a sugarfree energy drink maybe.

I read a study that showed more than three cups of coffee a day made any advances in which creatine would be beneficial to be negated. So if you sup creatine, too much coffee may make the creatine useless.
