Yup, backpacking is cool!
As for going alone or with a friend: I've done both, and to be honest I preferred the trips I did by myself. When you're with a friend, you're not forced to talk to new people - since you can always just chat with your buddy. You lose out on many cool things. Seriously, go alone.
"The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready.” -Thoreau
Europe is pretty expensive, especially the big cities (where you'll be staying most of the time). It's not just because you're living in a hotel (or hostel actually) all of the time, but you can't go home and cook for yourself: you always have to go out to eat, and that really adds up.
In all my travels, I've always carried way too much. Now, in some of those cases it was a necessary evil, like the times when I moved to a different country to live there for several months (and be presentable in an office) - but other times, you can just go someplace with your backpack, a few tshirts, underwear and maybe a sweater and you're set. Less is more! I carried 35lbs when I moved to Malaysia: I was glad I only had to carry it to my apartment!
The vast majority of cities you will visit are just as safe as your hometown, if not safer. Yes, there's always a chance you'll get mugged - but most bad guys will just go for an easier target if you're a confident 200 pound male.
I don't agree with your notion that staying in a city for 3 days is enough. Yes, you can see all the landmarks and tourist traps in that time span - but you'll never get a true feel for the country itself. That's why I prefer to stay in one place for a few months to work there. To be honest, I would say two weeks is the minimum to really experience a place - otherwise what are you other than tourist?
“Tourists don't know where they've been, travelers don't know where they're going.” -Theroux

I understand that once you saw the nature of Switzerland and its beauty, you didn't care as much about the women. But since you still went to the cities I mentioned (Milan, Barcelona and Paris), how were they in terms of weather, women, nightlife and lifestyle? If you don't mind me asking in a short description for each. I'm very curious about those cities.

Phuk hostels bro. Just make threads on the misc detailing your epic journey across Europe requesting misc brahs in various major cities provide you shelter for the night. The most important part of this is getting to be a super high rep miscer first so everyone will trade housing for greens. Oh, and traveling mostly in the UK, Australia, Canada, and the US. That's a more global tour anyways. 3 continents instead of 1 brah

this to the ****ing max. i never understood the obsession with backpacking. why would you wanna go to another country, stick out like a sore thumb, and generally look like a *******. why not just get a room in a hostel for a week or so in 1 country and just chill out. my gf and I chilled in hannover, germany for like 2 weeks in a student dorm.. had our own kitchen, laundry machines, and dat chit was free (we had the hook up)
clifs:
backpacking = gay
pick a place in europe, chill there for a short while, have a ****in blast

Not into backpacking too much brah, but excellent post. Started booking all my shiit for this summer and am planning to go to Barcelona and Amsterdam mainly...You said in your post that Amsterdam was full of hippies lulz...could you develop on that? I made a thread and a few brahs suggested Flying Pig which seemed great. I found a few more that seemed more on the high-end side and would much rather take those if FP and cheaper hostels are mainly used by hippies, people who won't take showers and what not...lol

I think your doin it wrong if u spent 5000 for 3 weeks. Unless you want to do everything completely on your own and walk around with a heavy ass bag and stay in **** places the whole time then thats the only way its worth it.
There are tour companies for young people (contiki I think is 1 of them)- where you can do a 3 week tour for around 3-4k, on a bus, good hotels w/ breakfast and dinner included

In general, if you don't look fully white, you want to avoid Eastern Europe (100% srs) (no racist)
If you're a white dude you should be fine. OP's case was different because his cousin. My experience and the experience of my friends has been positive but you can really tell how racist they are in the Eastern countries even by watching them interact with other tourists.[]*[] Canada

I did 4.5 weeks for around 4k, just little daily purchases add up. I definitely liked not being on a set tour.. met people, stayed in cities longer and left earlier than planned, felt more immersed than having someone lead me around the whole time (still did some walking tours).
London>Paris>Brussels>Amsterdam>Berlin>Prague>Muni ch>Venice>Rome>Florence>Nice>Barcelona>Paris>Londo n. - Didn't plan flights the best and ended up losing about two days getting back to London but would not change anything.
Made reservations for a couple hostels, not a bad idea as some of the cheaper/nicer ones end up being full; some also have private rooms with 2-3 beds, which was worth a couple euros more to me as some *******s like to wake up at 5am and make a ton of noise after you just got back from gettin' yucky with da boys and definitely easier to bring a chick back to.
Be aware of your surroundings as I heard about a lot of people being pick pocketed and losing phones/money/etc, leave your backpack in the hostel/locker and just have enough money for the day. don;t have a giant obnoxious SLR hanging around your neck either.. walk with a purpose so you don't look like you're lost (easy target), be swole and you won't have any issues.

You meet a lot of people going out but I don't think I would've been able to go by myself.. everything seems like it would've been less exciting, you meet people while traveling but you will not spend nearly 24 hours a day with them like you would a friend.
If you go with friends you'll have a lot more stories to talk about and great memories.
