Windows 7 won't boot up, Hard drive has bad sector, can't reformat...Help!

So my computer was working perfectly fine yesterday.
This morning I wake up and I can't boot up Windows.

I tried to run the repair tool but it won't even load.
    Can't run in safe mode.

I loaded Ubuntu from a Dvd and I can read in Disk Utility that I have a bad sector on my hard drive, could be the reason why it doesn't work.

I want to run chkdsk to fix bad sectors but I can't since I can't boot up windows.
I tried to reformat with windows xp but It gives me a blue screen after it loads up the his drivers and stuff.

What can I do? I don't want to go buy a new HDD for 200$, Im sure this can be fixed!
    Thanks

I had a similar issue a few years ago with my HP Laptop (running XP). It wouldn't boot up. Apparently it was a common problem after certain Service Pack updates.

I took it to a repair shop, they pulled the HD and recovered everything from it and transferred it to an external HD. Since the laptop was so trashed (not related to the HD -- the display was messed up) I traded the broken laptop as-is for the external HD.

I wish Windows did have a live CD like Ubuntu does. I have saved my data more than once by running the live CD and recovering everything I needed.

$200? you can get a nice one for like $80...

you gotta schedule a check disk i believe because it can't work while your hdd is running as far as i know.. Like for example check Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors in the Check Disk Options window. Click Start the utility is unable to run on your hard drive while in use and prompts you to schedule the scan for the next restart.

Just put the windows CD into your computer and make sure your mobo is set to boot from CD. From there you should be able to re-format your harddrive. If you don't have a windows CD just torrent it and burn it to a cd.

Download Hiren's Boot CD. It's free.
    Boot into Hiren's
There is a tool call HDD Fix or something VERY similar.

It will scan your HDD and attempt to fix/repair bad sectors. It takes a bitch load of time depending on the size of the HDD (2-24+ hours)
Try this before anything, I saved a few computers this way. Then you can at least backup important stuff before it dies for rizzle on you.

On my desktop I was running 10.10 for a long time, ignoring the "do you want to upgrade to 11.06?", even though I dual boot 11.10 & Win7 on my laptop flawlessly.

Upgrading does not always work, and it took me hours (several, actually) before I finally burned the 11.10 iso and installed it from CD, right over 10.10. What is nice is that the data partition is untouched, so even though I had a complete backup on my external HD (the one I got from my crashed laptop HD, haha) I didn't have to use it since all the data was retained.

Plus, since all configurations are stored in the home folder (usually in a dot-file or dot-directory) I only had to install those programs I needed, and all associated data was retained.

I installed gnucash and since there was already a .gnucash configuration folder, everything worked out better than expected.

Try updating Windows and retain your program data....

Try updating Windows and retain your program data....
retaining data... i haven't tried... however, i finally finished an iso of win7 including all my typical programs i put on right after, for quick reformats. im actually still running 9.04 on one laptop.. and 10.04lts on my parents.. had trouble getting it going on a flash drive for some reason.. never figured that one, it would zoom in super close on setup and just freeze. oh well, got it on with cd and win7 for them. was goin to leave just ubuntu and virtualbox for win7 for connecting with the kodak printer (damn if i can find a way to get it to work with ubuntu)... but they didn't wana fool with that.. so just dual boot.

btw, for anyone running torrented win7. hide the kb971033 "blackhole" update.. another WAT activator catch. old news.. but got hit by that crap yesterday not anticipating it during a reformat.

Trying it right now, I went into --> Dos programs ---> Hard disk tools ----> Bad sector fix thing but it says ''Dectected 0 devices. Sorry, nothing to do''
    Wtf

Pull your stuff off the drive with the Ubuntu Live CD and reinstall Win7 to a new drive. Check Newegg daily deals, they're not too expensive.
