I'm about to buy a foam roller. I understand white ones are the softest, black ones the firmest and the blue ones are inbetween? Which type do you think I should buy? Thanks.

Im not sure if the question you are asking is brand specific but I've got a blue one and its great.
When I was researching I read posts telling people to avoid the blue ones as the are cheap rubbish. I doubt colour has anything to do with anything, it must have just been the one that reviewer had a bad experiance with one that happened to be blue.My training log:

Just be sure to get a roller that has a hard inner core. These maintain their shape significantly longer. As for too hard or too soft, the colors are brand specific.
If you have a lot of mass you'll want something firmer. If you're boney you'll want something more forgiving.
At the end of the day though the ****ty white foam rollers still work if you're a big dude as long as they still have their shape.
