It strengthens glutes and hamstrings.
You can do it without weights. Lie on ur back with ur knees up as if you were going to do a sit up (have your feet a little further away perhaps), and instead raise your hips off the ground. Basically what he did but with weight. You can also do a one legged version to try and iron out any side to side instabilities your glutes or hamstrings may have.
