Cadio, practice punching technique. Sparring will help u more in a fight, bags dont punch back. Or just carry a weapon.

Like Lee said, it can help immensely with punching technique. Also, it does strengthen the wrist to absorb/transfer impact. Obviously sparring is better, but there is a distinct difference between feeling your hand hit something (a bag) than simply shadow boxing. The former is better.

It allows you to throw hits without having to decelerate or hyperextend them at the end, the impacts probably help with bone density and alignment, learning how to through your weight into something so you don't bounce off it (as opposed to just throwing your hand out).

Shadow boxing's clearly also valuable since you do miss or get dodged/deflected during fights so training how to miss without hurting yourself is probably important too.

Then of course there's mitt work, which has value in the angles that a bag can't provide and reacting to what the trainer does.

I'd say that the microtrauma of hitting a bag a lot will, over time, increase bone density and strength. Unless you already know basic sparring technique in the first place, I doubt it will help improve form.

Punching a bag does not improve technique at all, you have to have a good technique in the first place. Punching in a fight is all about timing. Anybody can hit a bag for hours/weeks/months and still punch completely wrong and cause no damage to his opponent if he evens hit him.
It is great for cardio, a lot harder then it looks. Jogging on the spot while punching is also good for cardio and it will defo build muscle in the shoulders.
If you want to learn to punch and hit bags and pads and people then get down your local boxing gym and have a go at it properly. Its good fun once you get used to being hit in the face

what does a punching bag do
it punches you back according to newton's laws of physics.

It is also a good spotter on the bench press.

Pretty much this. Good for endurance and can improve power. Unless you know what your doing it doesn't make you a better boxer, many people will actually pick up bad habits hitting a bag with no training.

Most possibly, but he wasn't asking about what can go wrong with a heavy bag. He's asking about the benefits.

Improving your work on a heavy bag is not going to make you worse in a fight, and he wasn't talking about how it will help you if you use it improperly.
