So how long does it actually take to LOSE muscle?

Personally, if I take a week off, I tend to lose 5 lbs/1 rep off of most exercises. If I don't lift for 2-3 weeks, I definitely feel like I've gotten noticeably smaller, and will have lost a few pounds. This is also a result of the fact that I eat significantly less when I'm at home and don't workout (like now during winter break.) Is this all in my head, or is muscle loss a much more rapid process than muscle gain, assuming a caloric deficit and no lifting? Also, I started taking creatine and haven't been taking it lately while I've been on break, so that might also contribute.

read somewhere like it takes twice as long to lose the muscle that you have earned. and half the time to gain it back once you start up again. ntsureifbroscience.

Ive stopped working out for a month and my weight remained exactly the same and my arms stayed the same size.

Then I have a buddy who stops for 2-4 weeks and loses inches off his arms but gets it back quick.

strength goes relatively quick, but muscle not so much. to actually maintain muscle you could probably get by working out just once a week. sure you might lose some, but it's not like muscle just disappears. I think the biggest thing you'd notice is a lower sense of well being though and you'll want to exercise more.

As long as you eat at maintenance and enough protein, it would probably take awhile, but I wouldn't really advise testing that theory, unless you were tired of being muscular. I haven't been able to really workout over winter break, and I'm still sitting at the same weight/size.

Can't wait to start lifting again though.

I haven't really lifted since October after I got sick... I lost about 7 lbs and most of it was muscle... it will come back with about 3 weeks of lifting and eating... I decided to do yoga and cardio for a while after getting heart palpitations... you never lose the muscle fibers, so getting back to where you were is always pretty quick.

i dont feel its that quick op, your weight loss was probably alot of water weight from the creatine. also when you load up on creatine and suddenly stop taking it you seemingly lose some mass which is only due to water retention.

Yeah everyone is different, I stopped for 3 weeks in the summer when I was on vacation and lost a lot of definition. It was about 5lbs of muscle, but I got it back in a month.

My anatomy book stated it takes about 10 days for the muscle to atrophy without any stimulation from heavy movement.

I stopped lifting for 1 month and replaced it with light calisthenics. After the month I had lost 10 pounds and strength went down considerably. I went from 165 to 155. 4 months later my max bench is still a good 5-10 pounds from my all time high, and it'll be another couple months b4 I hit 160 again.

I was sick for a week recently and told one of the trainers (he knows his sh*t) that I feel like I lost and he said a week doesn't matter it's all in your head even if you ate like sh*t which I kinda did.

I took 4 weeks off to travel. Did not work out at all. Lost an average of 5% on each exercise. Took me another month to get back to where I was

If you actually want to lose your muscle/or typically lean down, what's the effective way? Just stop lifting and do cardio?

always good to have a week or 2 off every 6months or so. when I don't train I feel abit deflated but I don't think I would ever go back to my starting size if I stopped all together, i've broken too many barriers.
the only reason you cant do something is because you have convinced yourself or allowed someone else to convince you that you cant.
you can do anything, you just have to KNOW that you can. whether you think you can or you cant, you are right.
