After working out at night, eat or not to eat?

After an evening workout class, the trainer always tells me to have ONLY a little protein after working out at night (a shake or yogurt usually) to see amazing results. I usually try not to eat before going to bed, but I always eat light before I go to this intense class, and I'm hungry.

I usually go to bed 3 or 4 hours after leaving the class, but sometimes, after my yogurt, I am just not satisfied.

What do you think? Is it better to listen to my body, or is it too close to bedtime to eat more then a little? We debate this all of the time.

I eat most of my food at night. It's the time I find hardest to control my appetite, so I don't eat much during the day and eat a lot at night.

I eat at night, just make sure to plan well. Or have the yogurt and a piece of grilled chicken/something similar. High in protein, low in cal and no carbs really.

if you're hungry, eat. period. just plan it into your cals and macro's and you're good to go. don't listen to anyone who says you shouldn't eat at night or to only eat x or avoid y.
    i second what wp said.

if you are finished with your workout, then you need refuel. three most important meals of the day, breakfast(hence breaking the fast), pre and post workout.

How will the body begin to recover, on its' own, not without the food! So eat the time of day really doesn't matter, but save your food for this time.

What an idiot trainer. What matters most is calories in vs calories out over a period of time, regardless of what time of the day those calories are consumed. Your body can't tell time....

Definitely eat! While you may not want pre-bed to be your largest meal of the day, your body doesn't stop burning calories when you're asleep (particularly in a constant state of trying to repair muscle) and you do need to refuel after a hard workout. Unfortunately, some people take the lessened calorie need while sleeping to an unnecessary extreme and create rules like "don't eat after ____ time, no matter what" and that sounds like the mindset your trainer is in.

I've leaned up having a protein shake and fruity pebbles in whole milk before bed but over time I've found that eating sugary, processed carbs before bed seems to keep me from sleeping very well and I go to bed still wanting to eat even though the calorie content should have satisfied me. As time has gone on, post workout I've done really well eating a cup of cottage cheese with a banana and a tablespoon of peanut butter squished in. It tastes good, is satisfying and I sleep well. And I will eat this IMMEDIATELY before bed.

Because of the intensity of your workout, you may not be able to stomach a "real" meal too close to your workout, but I hope your meal before that is pretty substantial. You'll perform better with plenty of fuel. Aside from keeping your daily calorie and nutrient intake where they need to be so you can recover between workouts and progress toward your goal, your ability to perform at your best is a big part of what is going to give you outstanding results.

Get rid of your trainer ..... eat !!! you don't lose weight (if that's your goal) and you don't gain muscles by starving your body
you need more than just a yogurt

Dont be affraid to eat at night! Especially if you finished a workout! I wouldnt suggest carbs but protein and veggies are fair game to me! Since you are working out late I would suggest doing 2 meals before you go to bed. Eat once you get home from gym ex. chicken/fish with veggies or salad. Than about 2 hours later, right before bed do a real thick protein milk shake. ( Blend with lots of ice to make it seem like your filling your belly )

It really makes no difference what time you eat. I IF so all of my calories are eaten in the second part of the day with my last meal generally an hour before bed and it hasn't hampered my results whatsoever.

This is a great posting. Since the only time I have is to workout at night as well. I am always debating this..so i just have a protein shake after working out.

Eat what you want after working out, seriously. What matters is that at the end of the day, you've met your calories and macros. I always like a nice balance of protein, carbs, and fat.

If you're digging the protein shake, keep it, but it's not necessary. Real food will give you the same end result.

and it'll all turn to fat. carbs after 7 turn to fat. sigh.

op, fyi, i don't work out at night but still eat right before bed and have protein, fat, and carbs, and wouldn't have it any other way.
    i second what wp said.

mausi79 and i were separated at birth.

i don't believe in iifym (for physique purposes, yes, but for health and wellness, no), but i do believe you should seriously love every single thing you eat.

Workout or not, I always eat before bed. Or else I wake up in the middle of the night to pee and I'll start gnawing on my bed post.

    But really, eat.
