    Back pain

I've had this lower back pain for several months now and I was wondering what excercises I should do or stay away from?

I would first go to a Physio and get it checked out before doing weights. Do you know what caused it? Spondylolisthesis can be a common condition which is related to the vertebrae but it could be muscular or neural. What type of pain is it? Burning, tingling etc. Some exercises such as squats can aggravate things. Is there a particular movement you do that makes it worse?

I've had a similar problem with my lower back off an on for years. I know mine comes from a mixture of poor posture and weak erectus spinae in relation to my abdominis. If its a similar issue, a way you can resolve it is by gradually building up the strength in the lower back by doing exercises such as back extensions or romanian deadlifts.

You have a tight lower back because you have weak glutes from sitting on them all the time. Strengthen your glutes and I will put money on you feeling better after the first time. I can not believe someone with a degree in fitness could not have told you that. DO NOT DO BACK EXTENSIONS. Look at the injury recovery and prevention sticky posture correction and fix it.

I would say it's possibly you have a lumbar lordosis. This is when your pelvis becomes anteriorly tilted (tilted forward) due to tight muscles, in this case your hip flexors and lat's are going to be tight along with erector spinae. Because of this your hamstrings and abdominal muscles are going to be weak.

Very hard to say from the limited info given, but if we assume the Lordosis, then I would say work on rolling and stretching the hip flexors.

Nobody should be even offering a "maybe" diagnosis of anything like that given the limited information and not being able to actually see you to assess you. Go to a physio or sports medicine doctor, get a proper diagnosis, and then we can likely offer advice.

I've been to both, along with atight chiropractor for years and they couldn't tell me I had a body plagued with muscle imbalance leading to knee, back and shoulder pain. Over 90% of the people I train have the same problem so why wouldn't/couldn't I assume this? Go see the doctor and get shots and pain medicine and go right back when you snap your spine next month doing bench press.

As being 5 months away from being a physical therapist I would have to say go see a physical therapist before doing any strenuous activity. They should give you a home exercise program based on what is causing pain in your back. It could be several different things and could be as simple as sitting up straighter or having to go through a few weeks of therapy if it is a bulging disc. Most states do direct access now but you may need to see your family doc to get a referral.

There is an awful lot of advice flowing around here for a super vague description of a potentially very complex issue. If you can't provide a huge amount of extra detail, go see someone in person that can properly assess what might be going on.

Unless youve had an acute injury, 9/10 times its due to poor hip mobility and or weak/inhibited glutes with tight hip flexors.
