Crossfit isn't eactly known for it's safety.............

It delivers on its promise of delivering quick and almost unparalleled results...............but, has an indisputable reputation as a joint and cartilage killer. I've heard of more severe injuries coming out of crossfit recently then I witness in college athletics. It's insanity.

Do you know anything about the human body? These are horrible! These people have been taught nothing about proper mechanics, all have a dream of being megafit looking, and will all withstand SERIOUS injuries before they ever even get close to being 'fit'.

They used to post videos on their website and the form I saw was incredibly bad. Aside from form, rhabdomyolysis (death of muscle cells) is also something that can result from Crossfit - or any hard core exercise program.

ITT people who've never seen a standard continental (also known as a "dirty clean") and who've never cleaned an axle. Holding on to two to three inch diameter bars is rough enough already and it just becomes necessary at a certain weight to roll it up. That said it has no place outside of strongman conditioning and is definitely risky without a belt.

Other than why the hell would they be doing this outside of strongman training I don't see what's so terrible about it. Sure there are some flaws in their form but I saw worse things everyday when I trained in a commercial gym.

I'm betting most of the people in this thread are not familiar with strongman training.

I guess the joke about miscers not lifting is true.

    1) Bumper plates, usually 10, 15, 25, 35, 45lb rubber plates used for Oly lifting

    2) Continental clean. Not sure why crossfitters are doing em but..... that IS a legit way to clean a bar.

    EDIT:
    3) Crossfit is retarded.

    This is about it.

There are things which are good for the top level of a sport which are not good for complete beginners. Someone who is doing a continental clean with 95lbs should not be doing a continental clean. It reminds me a bit of when some round-backed deadlifter says, "but Bob Peoples deadlifted roundbacked!" Yes, and Bob Peoples deadlifted over 700lbs. Deadlift even 500lbs, and you can pick it up any fcking way you want, I don't care, you've earned the right to do whatever you want. But when you're pulling 225 I want to see a back so flat I could iron my fcking shirt on it.

A bunch of people who would struggle to clean 135 should not be doing a continental clean with a fat old axle.

I can't believe how terrible that was. Don't know how people were saying good job to that.

If people are going for PR's by using a dirty clean, especially if they are doing it with axles, that's their call.

But when you're a beginner being "trained," I think it's poor judgement to teach a technique that should probably only be used in certain situations, and only at advanced levels
I get a lot of questions about my fit recipes. All the recipes I've done (that are in .jpg) are available at this imgur link: http://imgur.com/a/Ytyip#0

^I got new ones, gonna make a new album with them all in it soon brahs.

Look at the title of the video - "Revival Strongman"

The text description also says - "Taken from an event with veteran CrossFit athletes. Hitting axle clean and jerks. Supervised by Strongman Certified Coaches. Axle weight is about 10-15lbs. This lift is not a standard Clean and Jerk."

They're doing strongman style on purpose, even though it looks as though many of them (mostly the guys and the blackish girl) could clean the weight pretty easily.

I was really glad to see that no one did the notorious "football power clean" where you clean the weight mostly by doing the splits under it.

That said, I really didn't like the form they were using for jerks and the way that some folks fought to lift the weight - most dangerous thing there for me.

Strongmen - why is the standard rack position elbows down and not more of a OLY front squat/rack position (elbows up, bar on front delts)?

OLY rack would seem to be less tiring, safer, and easier on the shoulders.

Maybe the fact that it's an axle/thick bar changes the form?

Only remember one person (girl in blue) who did elbows up at all.
No shoes, no shirt, and I still get service.

I'll approach this from both viewpoints:

Not all sports or competitions are safe. While doing the lifts this way may result in injury, there are things going on in all other sports that are just as dangerous if not more. Football, wrestling, gymnastics, etc.

Now these seem to be people at a Crossfit gym that appear to be amateur athletes. Perhaps they are doing this to add variety to their training? My question is do any of them understand the risks that are taken? Professional strongman understand the risks and they take from for potential rewards and because they have to love the sport.

In any event a few thought on the form:

    1. Are they competing? Do not pass this question and I think the risks outweigh the rewards.

    2. Why are they even trying to rest it on their body? Take a look at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLmmBns4yxk
As you will see, he actually is able to rest it on his stomach. Most strongmen tend to be bigger guys with more developed abdominal regions (fat and muscle). They can actually reset the bar multiple times and use it to get the weight up. At the very least they have a belt. These women have no fat on them. What are they hoping to rest the bar on? They have to go into excessive lumbar hyperextension to have any hope.

Very inappropriate choice of exercise for beginners. That's what it comes down to in my opinion. Crossfit in general seems to come down to doing things wrong and not even bothering to correct them. I wonder if Crossfit has appeal to some people because they don't really stress proper form? I don't particularly enjoy spending many minutes teaching how to squat or deadlift properly some times. I'm sure my clients at times just want to pound out reps. For their health and getting the best results you need to instruct proper form and drill it into them.

At Crossfit it just seems they throw weights on the ground and however poorly you manage to do it you get a GOOD JOB BRO and a slap on the butt.
