SS is a strength routine. Not a mass routine. Yes you will gain on SS. Give it a least 2 months. YOu will start getting stronger in a very short time....

Direct arm work will be necessary to get some decent growth, this idea that rows stimulate your biceps enough for maximum growth is absolutely ridiculous.
Starting strength is a good routine but the same can be done with a 4 or even 5 day split with higher volume, a beginner would benefit from the higher volume while progressively increasing weight at the same time.
Eat 500+ over maintenance, lift heavy, sleep and you will grow.
Check out some of Hola's splits they are quite good http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showth...1896861&page=1

do pullups (3 sets BW or weighted if you can do 3x10 BW) on at least 1 day (if not both) and biceps/triceps (2 sets each) on friday
example:
monday
squat 3x5
bench 3x5
rows 3x5
pullups
wednesday:
squat 3x5
ohp 3x5
deadlift 1x5
pullups
friday:
squat 3x5
bench 3x5
rows 3x5
db curl 2x8
skullcrusher 2x10

Since (I assume), you'll be consuming a 500 calorie surplus so that you're gaining around a pound a week, you'll have an indication of change in body composition without having to wait 2 months to be sure, as you can just measure your weight weekly, (and if you're gaining weight and getting stronger then you'll surely be putting on muscle mass)

Don't add any of the "accessories" until a month or two in, so scratch what you said about adding dips and chinups or whatever it was haha, and just stick to the SS for a while. I pretty much had the exact same forum post as you stating I was going to add a few workouts to SS, before even trying on it and many people posted "No common beginner mistake, adding exercises to SS too early" or along those lines.
