How to perform dumbell rows properly?

What is the best way to perform dumbell rows.

The way I performed it today is, I would let the dumbell hang at the bottom and stretch the lats for a good 2-3 seconds, then I would go up at a fairly speedy pace, but not too speedy, maybe 1.5 seconds going up, then I would squeeze the lats for a quick second and then I'd go down at about a 1.5-3 second speed and let them hang and stretch and repeat. I managed to only do 8-10 reps max before hitting failure.

Did I do it properly? Because I am worried I used too much speed or whatever.

    Thanks,

    Gmav
