because it's an impossibly open ended question that depends on too many things other than diet.

I love how a lot people on here think carbs have no effect on gaining muscle.

Why do I do this weightlifting thing for the last 34 years with all its ups and downs life has handed me? Because each time I came back stronger. NEVER GIVE UP. Gym life is about more than muscles getting bigger and weights going up. Its wisdom discipline dedication humility you name it.

technically if you were new to lifting and had alot of fat on you, yes you could gain plenty of muscle mass while still cutting
but people with decent bases id say nah, wont say its impossible but less significant compared with a beginner
before i started wrestling i went from skinny fat to pretty cut yet i weighed 15 lbs less than when i had started, in the mirror i was dramatically in better shape despite only "losing" 15 lbs of weight

Nah i'm not new to lifting or have anything against carbs although I'm recently getting into lifting heavier weight. Reason I ask is because i've read on low-carbs diets you don't necessarily have to be eating at a calorie deficit and can still lose fat as long as your nutrition is coming from the right sources. So if you are allowed to eat some what above maintence shouldn't it benefit both losing and gaining? Should've stated my reasoning in first post, my bad..
Edit: Someone also mentioned it could be possible on a Cyclic low-carb diet, however that works.

idk... I feel like this is happening to me right now, I've lost 3-4lbs in the last 2 months but i'm so much more vascular and look much more defined than I did before.. I haven't dropped below 190 for more than a few days but the body fat is still melting off me...
I never really lifted weight before and i may have had a decent base under the fat, but i couldn't see it.

surprise surprise surprise
i guess theoretically you could achieve gains while cutting on a low-carb diet, but that energy vacuum will eventually get you in the gym. i guess not if you're maybe a hardcore coke head or something or you pop speed balls like they're candy. at least for me, i always have zero energy on a low-carb diet over any signification period of time.
you can eat somewhat above maintenance all day long; however, your muscles still need fuel, and they highly prefer carbohydrates, as they're a much more efficient conversation process. your brain much prefers glucose, as well, so you'll notice a ridiculous brain drain when you're on a low-carb diet. your muscles make do with ketones, but that you're probably not going to get your best results like that. some people do, and these people are usually the ones who celebrate ketogenic lifestyles. for the rest of everyone else, you need carbs, whether cutting or bulking.
