    Drinking uncooked egg whites

My trainer and I spoke about increasing the protien intake, last night. He said to try mixing the egg whites in a protein shake.

What I'm talking about, is the pre packaged pasturized store bought (uncooked) egg whites.

I don't use any protein shakes, anymore, but I thought I mioght give it a go.

After trying it, last night, I am thinking maybe for the younger crowd, this is okay, but for us old farts with more sensitive stomachs, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea?

    Have you tried it? Thoughts?

    Sounds disgusting.

Why would this be beneficial over a yummy, chocolate whey protein mix?

It is actually not bad. It tastes bland to a little salty. There is a company that sells there product on this site. the name escapes me, but I have had their product at an expo, and it is not bad. The issue is cost. Drinking 4-8 ounces of egg whites at a time will cost you a fortune. I cannot afford it. I prefer to drink some protein, milk, and have an egg white omelet. I get the best of all worlds.

I use the egg whites in a protein shake with whole milk from time to time. Definitely filling.

Not sure if it holds true for the prepackaged whites, but I know raw eggs out of the shell run the risk of giving you salmonella.

They pulled the prepackaged cookie dough off the shelves recently while the tried to figure out how to keep that from happening to folks who ate the cookie dough raw. Must've figured it out, because I see it back in the coolers.

Maybe try to contact the company for their policy or an understanding of their packaging process?

Not sure how them breaking the eggs, filtering the yolks, and packaging them would change the contamination risk, but I may be missing something.

This was popular amongst my wrestling buddies when I was young. We picked it up from the Rocky movie. It was disgusting then and I was an idiot. I can't imagine it is better now that I'm less of an idiot.

Have tried it and found it a little disgusting. Why not just scramble the egg whites (takes about 5 minutes) and eat them with salsa? As mentioned above, cracking raw eggs and discarding the yolks is a lot cheaper than buying pre-packaged whites.

Salmonella risk notwithstanding, raw egg white has less bioavailable protein than when cooked. IOW, consuming them raw, your body can't get all the amino acid benefit.

There's just no logical reason to do this. If you want to increase your protein intake, just add another scoop of protein powder to your shake.

Or even better yet, eat a steak.

Lulz. I was going to look up a couple of citations to post, but decided it would be better to just cut to the chase instead.

In this forum, that sometimes backfires though.

What you are saying is true of raw, uncooked egg whites. This is not true of pasteruized egg whites. They actually have 100% bioavailability.

QFT. If they're pasteurized, the heat in the process renders them completely bioavailable.

but the big question... how much protein can the body absorb in a sitting? I heard it was somewhere around 30-50 grams or something... Not sure where I heard that....

So that being said, is drinking a 70-80 g protein drink really all that beneficial? I sometimes drink 40-50 grams in a sitting, but not usually any more than that.

I'll defer to Mr. Aragon on this one:

    http://www.wannabebig.com/diet-and-n...a-single-meal/

Based on the available evidence, it’s false to assume that the body can only use a certain amount of protein per meal. Studies examining short-term effects have provided hints towards what might be an optimal protein dose for maximizing anabolism, but trials drawn out over longer periods haven’t supported this idea. So, is there a limit to how much protein per meal can be effectively used? Yes there is, but this limit is likely similar to the amount that’s maximally effective in an entire day. What’s the most protein that the body can effectively use in an entire day? The short answer is, a lot more than 20-30 g. The long answer is, it depends on several factors. In most cases it’s not too far from a gram per pound in drug-free trainees, given that adequate total calories are provided [8,9].

In sum, view all information – especially gym folklore and short-term research – with caution. Don’t buy into the myth that protein won’t get used efficiently unless it’s dosed sparingly throughout the day. Hopefully, future research will definitively answer how different dosing schemes with various protein types affect relevant endpoints such as size and strength. In the mean time, feel free to eat the whole steak and drink the whole shake.

I'm guessing the pasteurization will also go a long way toward eliminating salmonella risks.

    Yes.

I don't have any citation I can post, but it's my understanding that the risk of contracting Salmonella from raw eggs is actually fairly small.

The thing is though, that if you've ever, even just once in your life, been the victim of such an illness, no risk is worth going through that again.

    My thoughts as well.

Plus, even if the risk of contracting salmonella doesn't go up as you get older, it's much, much harder on your body and more likely to result in fatality.

We had two large plates of chicken sashimi last week, between five people at the end of year party. It wasn't too bad.

I mix pasteurized uncooked egg whites with greek yogurt, whey protein powder and walnuts with no stomach issues.
If I want a little fat to be added I include unsalted peanut butter.

What makes you think old farts have more sensitive stomachs?

Sounds yummy. My wife makes me home-made Greek yogurt. I may give your recipe a shot.

I drink them all the time. I don't bother mixing them with powder, I will just drink a carton down usually. No stomach issues. They really don't have much of a taste to them IMO. I make a lot of omelettes with them too. Before anyone starts in with their "oh noess teh yolk ftw!!11" rant, I'm allergic to the yolks. I can get away with one or two here and there, but if I eat them regularly I break out in hives and feel like scratching my skin off. I do rely heavily on egg whites as a significant source of protein every day though. I go through about 8 quarts a week. The rest of my protein comes mostly from salmon, chicken, and 93# lean hamburger.

Thanks for all the responses, guys.

I never even ate eggs, before 3 months ago (hated them)
Ever since I lost a lot of weight, my stomach has shrunken quite a bit ( a good thing) so I have trouble, when it comes to adding even more solid foods. I feel like an over-stuffed turkey.

It's worth exploring alternatives. Not sure yet, if egg whites are it, but maybe I'll try it.
