is HIIT dangerous for obese/overweight people?

I'm helping out a friend lose weight. I'd think itd be best to start him light jogging for a few weeks before doing HIIT. But should overweight people avoid HIIT until they can run for a certain amount of time?
    Lifetime PR's

Squat 445 w/ wraps (405 raw no wraps)
    Competition Bench 275
    Deadlift 435

No. But since he is overweight he should really go see his doctor and make sure everything looks ok before proceeding..

HIIT is dangerous for de-conditioned people.
So is trying to squat 315 your first time.
So is going out in the sun for 2 hours when you're a pasty mofo.

Just start out easy and slowly increase the difficulty. A fat persons definition of HIIT is doing 5 burpees then gasping for air.

no you should get him to do HIIT, then 10 sets of deadlifts followed by 10 sets of squats at his 5RM.

if he is not able to complete this he should just quit.

Depends on his fitness levels. I'd suggest building him up to it. Start off with a light jog if he can manage it then gradually progress over a few weeks to HIIT.
