the Hiker Pro was the first filter I was looking at then saw the Vario in action. I like how you can adjust it's flow rate and it pumps on both strokes.

Tried the Steripen on a liter of water last night, very easy to use, pretty cool technology. Seems pretty rugged once you put the cap on. Can use it as a flashlight as well.

Intradasting, I remember from Cody Lundin's book that you can sterilize water by putting some in ziploc bags and laying them flat on the roof or any other surface that gets lots of sunlight/UV light. Basically the bag just needs to be fairly thin when it's laid flat to get any benefit from it, so most bottles are out of the question.

Anyways, got the PA 1-4x mounted, courtesy of Nick911sc, thx bebe. Bought one for my friend for his Bday about a month ago, really liked the scope and the illuminated dot. Shooting both eyes open might take a little getting used to with the slight magnification and distortion that comes with it.

yeah you can do it that way as well, just takes about 6-8 hours in the sun though.

If the water is dirty you will still need to filter it clear.

The close-up photos of the Katadyn filter on amazon made it seem a lot bigger.
It's better that its smaller to take up less space in the pack.
I may use part of the first paycheck from the second job to pick up the same supplies.
Have you ever had the chance to hit Mt. Katahdin in Maine?
It looks pretty awesome, I think I found a new destination outside of NY I have to hit this year.

the Vario is pretty large (7.5" x 4") but it is so versatile too. I love how you can attach it directly to a Nalgene. It also can go from higher Flow to longer life mode with a simple adjustment of the filter orientation.

Steripen is 6.1" x 1.5", would just shove those devices in a side pocket on pack.

Never been to Katahdin, would love to do the entire AT someday. Nice shots.

I might be moving to a new site in January but at least I can get some bonus checks at my current site this month. I want to get the girl an ipad and myself a stove and pack.

I like that you can charge AA/AAA batteries in that charger pack. I have a headlamp and some torches that use AAA so it would be ideal for me.

The Deuter Pack came in last night, DN you were right,
They just left it against the house uncovered to any form to the snow, but it was packaged well.

yeah Moontrail is pretty good. I was kidding about the packaging.

Nice looking pack. Lot's of pockets which is good.

Went looking at them again yesterday and think some of the Gregory packs might be my style as well.

Any first impressions?

The Variquick is nice, just wonder how good you can get it to fit compared to a sized Osprey.

I do like how they include the rain cover free of charge and it tucks below.

I wasn't sure what to think about the fact that the main storage opens from the side and top,
But it probably will save a lot of digging through when you're looking for something specific while on the trail.
Everything is sturdy and well built, I'm curious to see if the pivoting hip belt will be a noticeable comfort advantage.

I also forgot to take a picture of it, but inside the main compartment there's an insert that looks as though it's meant for a camelbak and there's an opening that is labeled for the water hose to feed through. I spent a good half an hour looking at it and trying to map everything out, lots of good storage and loops at the bottom to carry things like a bear canister and tent.
I was having troubles with my military issue camelbak and it's ability to hold the full capacity of water,
but that was more so on the bladder itself.
Still, it leaves me weary of having a bladder in with all the gear as I'm bouncing around on the trail.
I'll have to report back on how that setup holds up.

Osprey does the external water system very nicely.
tool loops are a big plus, I think Arcteryx doesn't even have them on their Altra line up. Go figure.

You hunting guys think it would be extremely wise for us trekkers to wear orange or at least strap an orange bandana to the packs when hiking? Heard a story of some woman gardening and getting shot in her own back yard.

There's no reason not to really, seeing your avi you obviously know a few things about the importance of visibility. A hunter orange baseball cap can usually be had for $5 and should cover visibility pretty good. I'm always amazed at how stupid some people can be. When we camp at the beach I typically put reflective tape on things around camp, and my rodholders and such just to slightly decrease the odds of being run over in my sleep.

you would think hunters would have better target recognition but still humans going to be stupid. I tend to go for brightly colored outdoor gear as a rule since you are easier to find in case of emergency.

Accidents happen. And I wouldn't advise backpacking on public hunting land during hunting season.
