I just got an assignment for my nutrition class that says to make one diet and one lifestyle change for three days and write an essay on it. Here are my options.
Diet
-Cut back on fat and cholesterol
-Choose low fat diary
-Add more Omega 3's to your diet
-Incorporate moer "healthy" unsaturated fats such as nuts
-No fried foods
-Cut back on hydrogenated oils
-Cut your sodium intake by eating fresh, unprocessed foods
Lifestyle
-Add more physical activity
-Don't smoke
-Limit alcohol to 1-2 servings a day
-Have your blood pressure or cholesterol checked
I already do every single one of those things for bodybuilding (excluding having my blood/cholesterol checked). So there's nothing I can change, which means there's nothing I can write about! I'm ticked. Gonna talk to the professor and see if there's anything else I could do.

what is wrong with high fat diary?
And also, aware me If I'm wrong, but the body can easily regulate sodium levels, so dietary sodium isn't that big of a concern? unless you have heart disease that is. (This comes back to mind from a thread in 2009, lukengood was on it)"Do not subordinate fundamental principles to minor details."

Opportunity cost, theres always something you give up when you opt for something else.
When you workout, the opportunity cost is some time you could have spent doing something else.Powerlifter at PTC Performance Training Centre

All you guys saying why to cut fat? etc, you have to look at this whole concept from a different point of view. What if you were a beginner, and didn't understand a crap about nutrition? Then imo it would be a better advice given when saying cut the crap food, such as burgers and other high fat foods, than saying "fat is needed you need to have it a lot". I mean, after they may get the hang of it, they'll know what to do and don't. Usually the stuff that has high fat is something like cookies etc snacks that one doesnt need, and which can be replaced with better options. Tuna with oil is perfect, and yes, it has fat in it. Just like it should.

I think the media spews it everywhere because your average person who is uneducated on nutrition will most probably be eating too much fat and getting to much cholesterol in their diet so simple messages like lower your fat intake are good for those sorts of people. Obviously if you know anything about nutrition you will know fats are essential so really all those messages aren't aimed at people who know anything about nutrition

Fair enough i see where you're coming from. In my opinion every person should be properly educated on nutrition, not too massive depth but still enough too see that a high intake of certain macronutrients can be bad but they are also essential. Realistically that's not going to happen so its probably a bit better they suggest lower fat intake since i know in the UK (i'm assuming its similar in America) obesity levels are too high (think its 1 in 4 in the UK are obese http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publichealth/Obesity/index.htm theres a link if your interested) and a contributing factor to that is eating too many fatty foods which are high in calories. So if you say all fats are bad you're going to be doing more good than bad in general since i'm guessing here but i think more people have issues with high fat intake compared to low fat intake.
/long rant but i'm bored as f**k

in after all these people think they are so much more superior to nutritionists and act like they have the perfect diet... pfft.
the whole idea behind cutting the traditionally known "fatty foods" is because they are calorie dense, low reward foods that most people (and most people are sedentary) cannot handle a lot of. if you ask someone on the street to name a food high in fat, they are most likely going to say McDonalds, taco bell, burgers, french fries, etc etc.
If you cut those foods, and replace them with the same amount of calories, except in healthy lean cuts of meat, fresh fruit, and vegetables you will not only be getting more fiber to help with GI health, but also more vitamins and minerals that help support a body's metabolism much more than the fast food type foods.
If you are marketing towards a certain kind of person (in this case overweight, average sedentary people), then you tell them something that makes sense to them. average sedentary people who are not looking to be a bodybuilder, etc do not need to eat as much saturated fats to raise test levels, etc.
Depending on who you are talking to, you change your prose. If I am teaching biology to grad students vs 8th graders my vocabulary is going to be SIGNIFICANTLY different. Same thing goes as if you are educating a bodybuilder on a diet vs educating someone with an 8-5 desk job who makes it to the gym sometimes.
