    SSD do's and dont's

Anyone know alot about SSDs? I just got one and installed mobo drivers, gpu drivers, windows, a few programs and BF3.

I know you are not supposed to defrag.

I also read that sleep mode can be bad for SSD's since it writes the ram to the harddrive? Is there anyway to prevent the ram from writing to the harddrive?

Anything else i should not do? Any other tips or advice would be appreciated.

Just called crucial tech support and they said that sleep mode can mess them up, and to modify the sleep mode to keep the SSD powered on if i wanted to use it.

if you surf the internet with it, disable pagefile indexing and make sure your temp file directory is located on another hard drive.

Yes disable hibernation mode (sleep mode). you can do that under the power options

Also, go into your BIOS and change your peripheral whatever setting from IDE to AHCI

Make sure your running Windows 7 as well so you get TRIM Support built in.
Dont ever defragment a SSD, it lowers the life span and serves zero purpose(thats what TRIM is for).

Mobo had achi automatically set and yes im on windows 7.

The lack of sleep mode kind of disappoints me.. i loved sleep mode with a normal hard drive. Its hard to understand why it would damage the harddrive but its something about it writing all of the RAM memory to the harddrive when being put to sleep, then the power cutting off from the HD. Putting it to sleep but having the harddrive still powered just doesnt seem as good it seems like the computer isnt really asleep. I may call Crucial tech support again later when i have more time and get them to explain it to me better.

Im sure a normal harddrive waking up from sleep would be faster than a SSD turning on from being completely off since you have to go through bios and login.

BUT.. I OC'd my CPU before getting this SSD and sleep mode did not work with the CPU oc'd. So , mabe ill just leave it OC'd and turn my computer off completely every time and just stop using sleep. If sleep worked correctly with both SSD and and overclocked CPU, that would be great.

Sleep mode cuts power to everything except the ram.

Hibernation writes the contents of ram to the hard drive, and then shuts down everything.

There is no reason that sleep mode should harm an SSD. The only reason hibernation would harm a SSD is by causing more wear on the drive, which SSDs are more susceptible to.

Running Ubuntu on a 32gb SSD and still have over 19gb of free space. I'm glad I didn't shell out for a larger drive, it would have been a waste.

wouldnt work if you wanted windows 7, since windows 7 + mobo drivers + gpu drivers etc are over 35 gb

ill try sleep mode some more and will see if i can get it work work properly since i love sleep mode

The reason it may not have worked is i have my ram set to the proper 2133 setting in bios.. for some reason "auto" is 1600 mhz but the ram is 2133 mhz and it works at that setting, other than this possible sleep issue.

Well sleep mode wont work with the CPU overclocked (something about resuming and the voltage being higher than stock) . And it may also not work with the ram clocked properly.. I have to declock my CPU to stock level and the ram to 1600 i think (its 2133 ram). Those may have been causing my sleep resume issues if it wasnt the SSD.

Not sure what you love so much about Sleep mode but the main purpose of it is power savings. You could have your SDD never turn off under the advance power saving options and just have it turn off the monitor. If power saving is what you're after, SSD typically have half the power draw of your typical 7,200 RPM HDD.

Also problems with Sleep mode in Windows 7 are typical. I was having issues with my comp coming back awake on its own after being asleep for 2 mins or less. If you go into the advanced power options again, you can change settings such as "Never wake with LAN or WAN activity" and "Never allow programs to wake". Enabling the prior option fixed my issue.

This can be located under your "Network Adapter" "Power Options" tab also.

A lot of sleep problems in general are motherboard related and how your motherboard deals with different sleep states.

My overclocked i7-920 and ssd go to sleep and wake up perfectly fine.

Parents computer went into sleep mode and their SSD would not power back on, wouldn't boot etc.

Had to get a replacement from the shop!

Funny how everyone has BF3 installed on their SSD (Including me)
