Doctor refused to do an MRI even though i'd pay for it. =/

Been having lower back pain for over a month now.
Nothing that kills me, but it's not something I can ignore for sure.
We got an x-ray done and he saw no sign of anything.

He assured me it's muscular and told me to buy a back support belt that you wear inside your t shirt, and this is to be worn while I work out.
Other than that I should get a support to put on my chair so I can sit right, and told me to do stretches etc.

    Wut do?

I've worn a belt for years OP and I can say, thanks to the belt, I have never had my pants fall off, ever.

Obviously you do not wear belts, got roofied, butt raped, and now you have angus pain that is materializing in your lower back when your large intestine got pushed in too deep by the ***.

    Good luck, and please

    be safe.

Is it the gym belt you wear from outside, or the support ones that go inside and are thinner?
I assume both are pretty much the same.
Think it makes sense to wear it now whilst still in pain? Apparently it even reliefs pain..
Good on you for wearing it brah.

I wouldn't get a back support belt. If it is muscular then while your muscles are recovering they are going to weaken and you'll get used to having the extra support from the belt. That's how it was explained to me by my surgeon and he's apparently one of the best in Australia. I would get a second opinion for sure.

A l-spine MRI is an expensive way to change absolutely nothing in your treatment plan. Without radiation of pain into the legs you aren't a surgical or steroid injection candidate. It is most likely muscular and you need to rest it and give it time to heal. If you can lift with the pain, then you are fine...

Hey man, I got an injury over a year ago like right on my butt cheeck. Its a l5 l1 disc or something and basically its the stuff between your spinal bones that comes out and its affecting my sciatic nerve and i get pain from just standing or sitting for long periods of time, and it goes down to the right sid of my leg. Make sure you get it checked out, luckily I'll be having surgery and its nothing crazy like doing a fusion or anything but still..

i had the same problem w/ my docs.

got x-ray of back and saw nothing but demanded an MRI after they said they wouldnt give me one.

found out i have http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheuermann's_disease so my discs are like triangular, thus giving me back pain. There is no way to fix it, but at least i know i dont have a blown disc.

Yes but if it's a disc I wont see a chiropractor (heard it's not a good idea).
Also, I have currently stopped lifting but will get back at it next week slowly. Only machines initially.

Yeah man even while working out. But that's just what I was told. Maybe you have a different set of problems to what I had. Can't hurt to get a second opinion but like that guy said ^^ don't stress about the MRI; it's not that important. I've had about 6 of them on my back and if I didn't have them nothing would be any different.

You probably have simple mechanical back pain for which there is no real treatment. Stay active, but don't do anything that hurts. An MRI will most likely show nothing of any real value. Honestly all you have at your disposable are pain killers, physio and surgery. I'm guessing surgery isn't indicated in your case, so just use some nsaids and see a physio.

May I ask what you think you have?

    It's called stretching.

Broke my back about 4 years ago. Went through 3 doctors. One thought it was a herniated disk, another thought it was a slipped disk. Got MRI, Bonescans, X-ray. Last doctor told me it was a stress fracture from looking at only a damn xray. Don't put your **** on one doctor half of them are retarded.

can you explain more about the pain? is it around the spine in the lower region? or is it on the spine?
do you get it more when you workout your legs (squats etc..)?

I have been strugglin with lower back pain for the past two years and i even fainted becuase of it. if the pain is around the spine area then it is most probably muscular. The cure for that , believe it or not, is stretching.. alot of it!!

Sounds like a good doctor, he gave you good advice, and spared you a most likely needless test. Do what he says, if next month you still have the same amount or worse pain, then go see him and explain that.

sometimes knowing what is causing the pain can be a relief in itself. Stop being such a dick, people may do whatever they please with their money.

make the patient take a MRI for no reason, patient complains about ridiculously expensive healthcare
save the patient from taking a needless MRI, patient complains about how stupid the doctor is

this is why doctors stop caring about patients ... because they always get **** for any decision they make
