For those of you who never served and show appreciation to those who serve, thank you for your acknowledgement. But if you really, really, want to show appreciation, then you must exercise your inalienable rights, for many have given their lives for these rights and freedoms.
a) Exercise your right to vote, regardless whether the candidate is D or R. If you don't vote, don't bitch cuz you volunteered to give up your voice.
b) Exercise your right to be heard if something bugs the crap our of you, as long as you do it responsibly and respectfully.
c) Exercise your right to assemble, as long as you don't flip over cars and burn down your neighbor's house.
d) Exercise your right to self-preservation. So go ahead and pack heat (my favorite is a Colt 1911 45ACP), but learn to use it first. Cops cannot protect you 24-7. There are evil people out there, and it is YOUR RIGHT and RESPONSIBILITY to protect yourself and your family.
e) Exercise your right to worship (or not), as long as you don't spew hatred and fear, and as long as you don't murder in the name of your 'religious beliefs.'
f) Exercise your right to be all you can be (I know, that's the old Army Slogan - the best Army slogan IMO). This is the beauty of living in a free society. "You may be whatever you resolve to be." General Stonewall Jackson, West Point grad, in his speech to VMI cadets.
Lastly, for those of us who no longer don the uniform, remember that service to this Nation is a lifelong mission, so let's not forget the sacred oath we once took: I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..

I ran to town this morning to do some Christmas shopping since my daughter was on a trip out of town, then stopped and had lunch at Golden Corral, which had a full house. I thanked and shook the hand of every veteran I encountered, which was quite a few (Golden Corral was almost *all* veterans), and could tell that I was the only one who had done so by the way they were taken aback.
Thanks and blessings to all of my brothers and sisters who have served, or are serving. I think of you and pray for your safety every day. I only hope we stand as inspiration to young men and women who are coming of age (My daughter told me two days ago that she's starting to consider the Marine Corps after high school. She's only 11, so time will tell, but it was so touching to hear her say it).

Our littlest one, 8YO, has asked to hear "Highway of Heroes", which, he says is "the song for our soldiers. Play it for Remembrance Day."
When our fallen return home, the route they take from CFB Trenton to the Coroner's office in Toronto is the MacDonald Cartier Highway, highway number 401. Citizens line up along the route, usually on overpasses, with flags, to pay their respects.

I get the feeling that older veterans feel like the younger generation doesn't appreciate them and takes their past for granted. It's like all they see is a worn out body. They don't stop and remember these men were once 'America's bicep' and protecting everything we have. I'll bet an 80yr old vet still has the mentality of a 20 year old fighter. God Bless them. And if this post doesn't make sense, it's because I'm on my 3rd glass of homemade wine.
