Basically, how many calories are sacrificed if you're holding onto the handles provided on a treadmill when performing your cardio session? Is it an significant amount?
Maybe it's been asked before... but I could not find any threads concerning this subject... so yeah =].
Thanks in advance guys.

Don't do it. It's real bad for ya.
No, honestly though I don't know if it's "bad for you", and I don't know how many calories you sacrifice.
But I do know that it's always felt really awkward for me, personally, and even though it's easier about halfway through your run, it's just not worth it. I tend to cramp up easier when I do that, I feel like I'm not putting in as much effort, and also (this is strictly personal) for some reason, I get shocked when I touch the handles. Not a lot, just slightly. I'd rather not screw around with voltage and ****, especially when my heart is already pounding.
Why are you wanting to do it, though? If you tell me, and it's the same reason as me, I have an answer.Axios †

Don't know what to say about calories and such...but when i hold handles to get HR readings.....and run like that it's always simple....
If i run normal without support it's much harder.....so i would think that it might deminish your results in a certain degree....but not that much i guess...If your body cannot handle it, make sure sheer willpower will.....

One major thing here is the speed. If we look at the absolute max (all the weight on the arms, legs floating in the air) it takes a specific amount of energy to hold that weight up for a given duration regardless of how fast the treadmill is going. But clearly increasing the speed increases the energy expended per time by the legs.
So someone walking incredibly slow might actually burn more calories by putting weight on the arms, but with higher speeds, hanging around at the top of a dip movement is like rest.
Also depends on stuff like how much the arms are bent, since fewer calories get burned with the joints locked and the arm bones supporting the weight relying less on triceps.

since we are on this topic, is it true if you keep your arms above your head while running it'll help burn more calories as opposed to swinging side to side? dunno where the hell i read this from, i believe it was a random post which i thought really didnt make sense
on a side note, if your calorie conscious while running.. why don't you drop it and do speed rope instead? HITT speed rope is really intense and it helps build your footwork/vertical jump/legs/core. just sayin
