    Squats and height

There is a myth that squatting can be counterproductive for growing taller. Is this really true? I know that squats stimulate hormones so wouldn't it have the opposite effect?

Also, is anyone aware of exercises that would make growing taller more favorable?

Well....IF you want to grow taller, by all means stop doing BB.....
    Go for swimming, baschetball....

To a certain degree this is not a myth and it apllies to teens or people that are still growing....And it's dependant on your genes and what you do mostly.

So at your age i would say that you are almost fully grown.... maybe, or maybe not....i gained 1 more inch from your age to mine.

And it is not about squatting mainly, but more on what your energy consumptions go....to building muscles and bulking up...or growing tall.....

U say squats....i say deadlifts too...i say all exercises that focus on sheer strength and getting strong muscles :P....

But there are too many factors to really say what will happen in your case....

Hope just that in the long run you are happy with your choice....
If your body cannot handle it, make sure sheer willpower will.....

    ^This

And everyone knows that people are tall because they are good at basketball. Totally out of the question that people who happen to be tall might be better at basketball.

From every report/study I have managed to find, weightlifting has 0 effect on height, given adequate nutrition.

Stunted growth comes from inadequate nutrition, hormonal problems, and damage to the growth plates of the bones.

Gymnastics and football are much more likely candidates for stunting growth because they're more likely to lead to growth plate damage.

Anecdotal evidence seems to be a chicken and the egg thing - people see some kid who is moving more weight than the rest of the kids in the gym. Later on, that kid is shorter than the other kids and it's obviously the weights that did it. Nevermind that the kid actually just matured more quickly than the other kids and reached adult strength and height earlier than they did. Of course he looked bigger and more muscular, he was already a man and they were boys.

If you had some sort of accident in the gym and did some damage, then I could see a problem with reaching your potential height.

The only other way I could see damage would be massive weights that would compress the bones against each other (is that even possible in a healthy person?) or incredibly bad form that lead to some sort of jarring under weight.

To the OP - unless your family has some history of late, late growth spurts, the only thing that is going to make you taller is a trip into zero G.
No shoes, no shirt, and I still get service.
