Shounen is anime aimed at younger audiences.
One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, FMA, etc. are all obviously top tier but they dont represent the entire genre and are in a league of their own. They are successful because they set themselves apart from typical shounen.
A proper representative of shounen (at least imo) would be something like Guilty Crown. The problem is they are formulaic and always have the same predictable plots, main characters never lose and are always cringe worthy main characters, unrealistic, no one ever dies, etc. I guess they would be considered the anime equivalent of Modern Warfare 2/3.

LOL!
We all have our preferences. Personally, I can't sit through a shoenen. When I watch an anime or a show, I have to feel something. Whether it's excitement, sadness, happiness, anger, or whatever, I have to be emotionally involved to really get into it.
Game of Thrones, Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, and The Wire...all examples of great TV shows where I had that level.
****gytime animes do that for me. Shoenen's, OTOH, put me straight to sleep (literally. I fall asleep on my couch).

Some shounens can be extremely irritating - I generally stay away from those. But others can be amazing. That being said, some ****gytimes are not only extremely irritating, they're unbearable. My opinion.
Pepper your jimmies, dat sakamichi no apollon. One of the best anime of the year imo, top 5. Read the manga after, I highly recommend; the show skips a huge chunk of it.I slow down so I can gather the power,

You are your thoughts. Life is perception, thoughts are perception, perception is reality ergo thoughts are reality, I think therefore I am.

What would be the best example then? DBZ?
I think most shows (in all genres) that are highly rated have their fair share of emotional scenes that effect the viewer in such a way that the FMA scenes did.
If FMA is an exception then most of the other shounen must be exceptions too because not all shounen are about main characters going super saiyan.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo
It's a JCStaff Production, who pretty much excel in ROM/COM ****gytimes. They produced Bakuman, Zero No Tsukaima, ToraDora!, Nodama no Cantobile, and Kaicho wa Maid-sama.
First episode seemed pretty solid. It's going to be a 24 episode series so there is potential there.
mikevall/Lifterforlife, you guys may like it.
