I've been on a 5 month cut now, definitely lost a good amount of body fat. Unfortunately I have had quite a few drinking excursions (been traveling a lot for fun) so that has postponed my ultimate goal. I'm slowing down on the traveling though so I expect to be where I want in the next 2 month.

That seems about the perfect amount of time to lose 25 pounds. Around a pound a week is the perfect speed for losing body fat and maintaining as much muscle mass as it possibly can.

Cutting duration will depend on four things:

    1) The amount of muscle mass that you have,
    2) Body fat percentage at the beginning of the cut,
    3) How good your training and diet is,
    4) How lean you want to get

    1) Don't fool yourself in to believing that you are very lean when you're not, it would be better for you to take longer to cut, because your body will be able to adapt somewhat and burn less muscle mass for energy,

2)The fatter you are the longer it will take to burn off the fat. If you are above 20% fat then the first few percentages will drop off very quickly, and as you become leaner and leaner your metabolism will begin to slow down, hence the drop in fat will slow down as well. As you begin to get in to the single digit percentages your body will begin to go in to survival mode and metabolic activity will slow down further thus making it incredibly difficult to burn off the remainder.

3)Training intensity, consistency and diet are paramount. You want to be stimulating the muscles and burning enough energy to be in a caloric deficit to lean up; which takes us to the diet. You have to be eating the right foods (protein, carbs, fats), in the correct ratios to be able to preserve as much muscle mass, while trying to maintain strength and be burning fat. That will take some experimenting. Aim for 0.5 kg (~1 pound) weight loss per week.

    4) Finally, do you want to enter a bodybuilding competition and win, or do you just want to develop some abdominal definition? Your diet and training should depend on your conditioning goals.
