Seriously. I'm tired of all these "fans" cheering for Wisconsin/USC/Texas/Bama when they didn't even attend the university. Nothing more degrading to a student/alumni IMO. I'm sure people who cheer for their team that actually went to the school would feel the same way.

Went to a school with no football team. Considering I paid my own way through school, I didn't exactly have many choices. So I will be a fan of whoever I want, and not a single fcuk is given what OP thinks.

I live in the UK and have never even bee to the US. I just love the sport of football. One of my dads mates went over to South Carolina because at the time he was dating a chick who was born and bred. He brought back a jersey and a hat. I ended up giving the jersey to the guys son (he's like 5 years younger than me). But kept the hat. I sort of follow the Gamecocks, but it got me into watching CFB alot more.

I don't really have a problem with a person cheering for a school they didn't attend until they start using the term "we". Unless you attend the school or you are an alumnus, you have no right to refer to a school as "we".

Well obviously anyone is entitled to use that term, nothing is stopping you. And if that's your way of justifying it then fine. But I will still cringe anytime I hear it. I use the term we with one school/team and that's Penn State because I spent 4 years of my life on that campus and am an alumnus. I have tons of Baltimore Orioles and Ravens fan gear but I have never once referred two those to teams as "we". I have no affiliation to them other than being a fan.

You can usually tell the difference between fans who attended the schools and those who were too dumb to get in but cheer for them and refer to them as "we"...still, if they have to pull for someone so be it. Only thing I have a problem with is those who have never really set foot on campus in their life and haven't taken the chance to understand what the school is all about besides the name. Went to a school my first year that everyone in my home state affiliates with, and it was actual culture shock - I'd guess more than 1/3 of the fans would just stop pulling for the team if they realized how poorly the school really represents people in the state.

Not necessarily, though I agree somewhat. If you have ties to a team through some other way. Dwayne Jarrett played in my conference while I was in high school and when he went to USC he started to make a name for himself. Brian Cushing also had a lot of hype coming out of Bergen Catholic so I watched pretty much all the USC games. Didn't hurt that Reggie Bush was ****ting on everyone at the time also. Now that I have nobody to support on the team I could care less about USC. And the reason I followed them goes for all the other athletes that come out of Jersey I played against or watched in high school.

THIS. Grew up/played against with many pac-12 football players. Many of the local guys went to USC so it gave me a connection to it. My favorite player in the nfl right now is MJD, not only because he is a beast but because I saw him come down to long beach california to play a great high school team. It blew my mind how good he was and from the time he went to UCLA i followed his career pretty closely.

I know that feel. I once heard that there were more season ticket holders for Oklahoma Sooners Football that never went to ANY college than alumni.

College football has become the new pro football, and it disgusts me.
