I think this could come down to personal preference.

I've seen two of the Legend GHD's and they look quite impressive, but I've never used a GHD myself (yet).

I can't say for under 800, but if you spend around 1k and get something like this you'd have one beast of a ghd.

    http://www.flexcart.com/members/elit...id=167&pid=679

I just bought the collegiate ghd which is the next step up and I love it, but honestly I could have gotten away with just buying the deluxe, I think they're pretty much the same except changing settings on the collegiate is a little smoother/easier, but for a home setting especially if there's only 1 or 2 users that's not too big of a deal.

I've got the Promaxima PL41. It's solid as a rock. Pads are very firm. If you want a bigger footplate, they can work with you on that.

Under 800.00 this GHD probably would be my pick.

You also don't want pads that are too firm (it is a big complaint from many strength coaches and myself).

If he can swing the extra money, I agree., the current price is 854.00. For an extra 59.00, I'd go with the above.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I am not locked in to the $800 - just trying to manage the total cost because I am also getting the Body Solid Lat Pulldown.

Darkfact & HealthNutMD: I am seriously considering the reco on the EliteFTS Deluxe GHR.. Two questions: Have either of you used a Legend GHR for comparison? I am really happy with my Legend powerrack and bench and would consider a GHR from them if it is comparable to this model. Also, can you only buy EliteFTS directly from them - or through other sellers like Ironcompany?

Pumping4Life & Fishinggeek: I was initially sold on the Promaxima PL41. Did either of you consider the EliteFTS model? Is the pad on the Promaxima pretty comfortable? Someone commented on the pad being pretty hard. Also, did either of you consider a Legend GHR?

Gazi: The Sorinex and Rogue look solid but given the choice, I would rather go with one with a larger footplate...

I looked at just about all of them on the market. I was simply trying to get the best overall value. The Promaxima is hard to beat, if you want to absolutely keep the cost as low as possible. It is a very well-built, solid piece with plenty of adjustability. The pads are pretty firm, but you adjust to that over time.

OP, I have this one and I'm very pleased with it. I don't know if its "better" than the Elitefts, and by using my Elite power cage as a reference, I'd imagine it isn't. That said, I've owned 5 GHR's I think and I know I wouldn't trade my GHR for an Elite (quality unknown) unless I got it for a steal. This one is very well made, sturdy, and easy to use. It looks good too and is comparable in aesthetics to some of the big names. They've recently upgraded the pads too and they are the nicest pads I've used on any of my previous models.

Where are you located? If you're anywhere near the Ohio/Pa area, you could pick one up...or at any rate try one out. Obviously, this would be a coincidence, but just thought I'd ask.

Also, I've tried the Sorinex model out at Rogue and I really liked it. For the price and because I know how sturdy it is, I'd personally have this one on my short list if I was thinking about getting one. I have not yet had a chance to get over to try out the Rogue model, but I live close to their store and hope to get on it before too long.

I'm pretty sure the OP is from MN.

And viking, no I don't have much basis for comparison. The last time I used a ghd was over a decade ago until I bought the efs collegiate a few months ago. I have alot of efs equipment so that's obviously one reason I bought it, because I know it will be quality in every aspect, the other reason is because just from watching video's etc I think that efs/williams strength do all aspects of the ghd right, most the other brands I looked into lacked one thing or another.

    Thanks, Darkfact.

Keetman - Looks like a solid GHD (looks very similar to the EFS). I am in MN and probably will have to pick one sight-unseen -- so I will probably stick with one of the three brands mentioned - EFS, Promaxima or Legend...

I understand. Just know that the elite is going to be over a grand after shipping and the split pad is extra. That outlaw strength model comes shipped for $800 with a split pad & band pegs. Its a nice model, all I can say is I have no complaints for what you're getting.

If you just have to go with a commercially made model, don't forget to give that sorinex from rogue a look. I have done ghr's on the one they have in their showroom gym and it was a lot sturdier than you'd think from the pictures. It is a good piece of equipment for the price (about $750 shipped to Minn.), made by a great company, and sold by a company that has fantastic customer service.

Just some thoughts since you stated your goal was to stay around $800.

    Outlaw GHR

What model is your unit? It looks different from the one dumb.bell linked in his post? Also where in Ohio? I'm going to pick one up.....

    Thanks!

Ya know, after I wrote those posts, I took a second look on ebay and I found the same thing you did, they are a little different.

That is the ******** link to Rick's page. He's the guy that owns Edge Fitness systems in Canton and from what I can tell he's the guy that makes the equipment for Outlaw.

I just looked it up on his site. For $750 you can get the deluxe model, which is mine. The one outlaw is selling on ebay is the econo version and Rick sells it for $495. I'd call first, I haven't been to his new place and I don't know what he has in stock. He probably has one available, but it would be best to find out fo sho.

You tell me brother, I have yet to nail this down. I have briefly discussed it with Rick and he didn't hide that he knows the Outlaw Company owner. He just he knows him and he's built some things for them. I have had some discussions with other members that led me to believe Rick was the manufacturer. All I know for sure is that they make identical stuff and clearly have some connection. It also seems that outlaw's prices are higher, which again makes me think Rick is the manufacturer.

Good stuff regardless and good guy like you said.

The top 3 I had on my list were the Promaxima, the Legend and the Sorinex. My price range was right at were you are at.
The thing that sold me on the PL-41 was the linear bearings, and the adjust-ability of the foot piece.

They also made the footplate and color scheme to my order.
My total came in at $805 shipped with the bigger footplate.

As far as the pad goes, it is a bit stiff I guess but I am used to it so it's no big deal.
I also love the knee platform for getting into position for doing GHRs. It doesn't get in the way of the movement and it's nice to position yourself while you get ready to do the exercise...
I also like the handle above the rollers. I grab it for doing a reverse-hyper like movement. Works great.

I'd second this. Bought the Collegiate and it's plain awesome, but seeing how well it's built I am sure the Deluxe is more than enough. You can't go wrong with EFS GHD. There's definitely other good ones mentioned in the thread already so factor that in if cost is your primary concern. EFS has sales all the time so if you're in no rush...just wait.

I've never talked to Rick, but I had spoken to a guy named Ken Marsh who supposedly represents Outlaw Strength along with Michael White who owns it. Ken claimed to make all the gear and in the end I never ordered anything from them anyways. A few months later, I saw that Rick's website from your link and I immediately had the suspicion that he made the stuff for Outlaw. Who knows, maybe they do make some stuff. In my opinion, he probably makes most of their stuff if not all.

Wow - thanks for the all advice guys; you are really making this purchase decision tough!

I think I am down to the Promaxima or the Elite FTS -- leaning slightly towards the Promaxima -- but the differences seem so small that I think I will just have to make a call.

-- The costs are within $200 (and I plan to have this forever), so that isn't playing a huge part of the decision
-- Both look to have large foot plates which I like (if I request the larger Promax one like other posters have done)
-- The split pad on the EliteFTS might be a little more comfortable than the Promax (subjective from other responders)
-- The Promax has the linear bearings which might be easier to adjust
-- The Promax has the knee pad which would be nice for getting into position

Really wish I could see and try both of these side-by-side...

Bumping this. Right now you can get the EliteFTS Deluxe Glute Ham Raise for under a grand. They got a 10% off deal ATM and its on sale for an extra $50. I'm taking the plunge.
