Wow I'm surprised to see this thread is still alive. I really need to update my blog. I'm setting PR's on my lifting for strength and endurance and running all at the same time these days. Planning to do my first powerlifting meet this year and the goal is to do a sub 20:00 5K the same month just to annoy people who say you can't run and lift. I got skinny runner haters and fat weightlifter haters both.

Nice! Have yet todo some trail running but heard its better for you.. Was just getting over some running injuries when I suffered an ac joint separation in fall of my motorcycle... Was in sling for 3 weeks and out of commission for 8 weeks. Just got back in gym last week and hope to get out running soon!

I ran in Brooks Glycerins for several years but about 6 months ago I converted to a minimalist shoe the Brooks Pure Connect. I bet I shaved 30-60 seconds off my pace immediately and never looked back. Cutting your shoe weight in half is like getting a new set of tires it makes an enormous difference. Also mathematically speaking there are plenty of statistics on how a lighter shoe, everything else being equal, causes a speed increase. Plenty of articles out there that will explain it better than me but weight off your feet has a bigger impact than off any other part of your body.

Impressive goal! I can't even imagine what your times would be like if you weighed less Spartan, you sound like you'd be a National Class runner!
Just stumbled across this thread.
I've been Bodybuilding on and off for a couple years but only seriously for the past 4-5 months. I'd fallen culprit to the myth that "hardgainers" (not that they exist) should keep cardio to a bare minimum. However, I realised that my walking to & from the gym (9 miles a week), although maintaining my fitness, would never get me fit so to speak.
So, I've decided to get back into running.
I've never been a very consistent runner but having done sprinting at high school, I've always been reasonable over short distances. I'm really anything but a long distance runner; I struggle to run anything over an hour & I don't enjoy it. The last week or so though, having picked up running again, I've done some 5k runs & I've really enjoyed them. I've felt much better for it too. I think some real Cardio will make a big difference.
Anyway, my goal is to improve my endurance & lower my heart rate during lights runs. I also want to get my 5k time to ~25:00, which shouldn't take long at all. My aim is then to get it down to sub 22:00 this year & see where we go from there.
If I continue to enjoy it as much as I have recently, I might do the occasional 5k race & incorporate some more running. I shied away from running in the past because I just thought "I'm not built for endurance" but I've improved over the years without much consistency & probably have the potential to be a rather good 5k runner. I guess bodybuilding has taught me that with work, anyone can have a reasonable shot at anything.
I was wondering at what weight I would see a decrease in my potential? I really have got the bug at the moment, I'm looking forward to my runs almost as much as my lifting days. I might change my overall goals even, perhaps 160lbs instead of 175lbs.Maximum Lifts
Squat = 154lbs 5RM (ATG) | Goal = 176lbs 5RM
Deadlift = 253lbs 3RM / 275lb 1RM | Goal = 2x BW 5RM (On Hold whilst doing AllPro)
Bench Press = 110lbs 5RM | Goal = 1x BW 5RM

Been using minimalist shoes since 09. First with puma solah and h-streets. Now using the merrel barefoot shoes.
Found dropping weight, and lifting heavy made huge difference on times. Read weight loss is easiest way for guaranteed increases. I think most say 10lbs is about 20 secs off your 5k.LBS - BF Date Comment
