I just don't get GHDs...(sorry)
I have to come clean. I love ghetto GHRs. I just can't see the purpose of buying a device (GHD) specifically for this exercise. I know you can do reverse hypers / GHD situps, but is it really worth it for the space consideration and $? I have been doing GHRs on my Lat Machine (BodySolid GLM83) for the past 3 months and have gone from having to use bands to help to no bands at all. I just use a pad for my knees. The machine cost me $275 (new) and gives me alot more exercises options than a GHR with a fraction of the cost. I know there are alot of gym machine-alohics in here (I am one myself, but running out of room), but I am having a hard time justifying the cost/benefit of this machine. I have shown I can make progress and get a good calf/hamstring workout w/o a dedicated GHD.

I think you've answered your own question.
It's your gym, your space, and your money. You (or whomever is making gym decisions), must get the information available about a piece of equipment and weigh that against the variables. Things like cost, individual finances, available space, goals, type of exercises usually done, gym aesthetics, ability to comfortably do ghetto exercises, and chance of success are all going to weigh heavily into this process.
Its the same reason some people like powerblocks over ironmasters. Heck, now that I think of it... there are some respected members here that don't feel the need to buy anything but spinlocks if you can't afford fixed DBS or don't have the space.
They're not wrong, but neither are the guys that have a grand wrapped up in their im's.
The reasons you pick one option over another are as varied (and probably come from the same place) as the reasons we decide to workout at home versus a commercial gym.

I just use My bench to improvise, no space for a ghr in My gym area....of course a ghr would be better though.

I agree considering how much they cost I think it is a waste of money. There are many ways (ghetto) you perform this exercise. This is basically the way I have been doing them....

I think a paying for a new F-150 is a waste of money when my 98 Dakota gets me around just fine.
I do think that my GHD was worth every penny I spent on it though.
It all really depends on what is important to you and where you want to spend your hard earned $.

The most valuable part of the GHR device is the footplate. If you don't push with your toes you can't fully engage your glutes and you don't get complete posterior chain involvement and you aren't going to see as much benefit to your squat and especially your deadlift as you could get out of doing this exercise.
Another advantage of the GHR device is ability to make the exercise harder when you need to without compromising your safety as many ghetto variations can.

Dude, you obviously never have owned a new F-150. And you are from Colorado? Head up to the Ford dealership in Greeley and look up my buddy, the fleet salesman. He'll get you in a real truck. . . .
You need a rack, bench and 300-lb. Oly set. Now, what was your question?
