i like the deadlift better. but I kind of have to say that the squat is the most difficult movement. I literally get anxious/nervous before squatting

I can recovery from squatting. 700pound deadlifts... not so much.
This is exactly why I only squat now; rowing is way too much lower back stress, adding deadlifts just once a week is way too taxing on the muscles, not to mention it's incredibly hard for me to have good form with my extra long torso.

Squat low bar + wide, your hamstrings will be torn.

Deadlifts are more CNS exhaustive, and if used correctly can provide alot more mass to the back than squats can, and since i think the back is the holy grail of bodybuilding, i will have to say deadlifts.

However i must say, i love squats and they are my main leg exercise, coupled with SLDL, and some leg extensions

Correct deadlifts will leave your low back pumped, and your hamstrings destroyed. I feel squats are more of a quad dominant movement, because i feel there is no point to a low-bar squat as the movement almost mimics a deadlift. ATG high bar squats imo, are prob the best leg builder.

Moral of the story, do both + 1-2 isolations = big legs and back

I do low bar, My quads are still growing decently.

Because a low bar puts more emphasis on PC doesn't mean quads aren't getting a workout. Lets remember that with low bar = more weight, so even if quads get less strain, the extra weight helps balance this out IMO.

I disagree. Having switched from Oly lifting to PL, and subsequently my squatting style, I have found that if anything, my lower end of the quads are less developed than they once where.

I believe Olympic deep squats will activate the entire quad, especially the tear drop, much better.

Might have to do with loads. I switched from high bar 3-4 months ago, 1 session a week. Squat went up more than 30kg in the process and squat more days, more volume etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you did OLy before... wouldn't you have been squating a lot more than when you are doing powerlifting? less volume + a wider squat stance that doesn't put as much emphasis = less development, and perharps even backwards.

I guess what I'm trying to say, I went from high bar 1x a week to low bar 2-3 times a week. Thus for me, my quads are getting hit much more than they once did.

If you went from squatting 5 times a week with a quad dominant high bar to 2-3 times a week lowbar, it does make sense that the quads lost development.

Maybe I am wrong in my assumption, but my quads are as big as they have ever been.

It's a good assumption, and it is true.

What I was saying was that the mid thigh measurement was still insanely large, as where the quads, where I notice the greatest loss was near the knee, the bottom of my sweep and tear drop are not as pronounced as they once were. Those areas take a full movement of the knee to activate best.

My hams and glutes did explode.

I think therefore the best solution would be a combination of low bar squatting, and Olympic front squatting during PL season.

Once my meet is done I will be spending 12 weeks doing high bar only before moving back into prepping for PL meets.

My hams and glutes did explode.

Interesting, I have never really put much attention to any measurements closse to knee, just mid thigh, lots of mass have been put there through low bar. probably my lower leg is lacking.

Initially when I decided to switch lowbar, I had the intentions to do Power day, high bar atg, speed day. So my quads would still be hit. As time went on I lost a bit of motivation on high's as I liked putting higher numbers with low bar back squatting. Probably false economics as I have lost considerable power on high bar.

I think it is time to incorporate them again, cheers/

I do deadlifts more frequently. With squats, I'm always afraid I'm going to fall over or I won't be able to push the weight back up or something, so I tend to go for the leg press unless I have a spotter.

I'd much rather squat 160kgs. than deadlift 160 kgs. So I prefer squats to deadlifts any day of the week.

In my opinion deadlifts, but I'd be fool if I wouldn't do squats.
I do now what others won't - so I can have later what others can't.

I never understand how people can squat more or same as their deadlift, I think if squats are done with proper form and full ROM you should be able to deadlift more (unless of course you don't have a strong grip)

My 1RM on deads now is around 290-300lbs if i had to guess and on squats i probably couldn't even hit parallel with the same weight, and lets not even talk about ATG then.

I am genetically predisposed to very strong big legs. I have always had them and given the fact I swam for 10 years competitively that also helped develop very strong, leanly built legs. Having said this, I can squat a lot and have full ROM even though I have very long legs. It's just how I am.
