A couple of years ago the question was between Maicon and Alves. Now i think its pretty clear who is the best one today.
Anyway, i particularly remember your name saying in this thread (or probably the last one) how Dani Alves didnt knew how to defend and he only seemed good because he was playing with Barcelona. Hell, i think you even said that Sagna was better defending and at least as good attacking...
The funny thing is that a couple of weeks after that, Alves completely neutralized Ronaldo in los clasicos and everyone was creaming about him around here.
Hard to take you serious in this subject my friend.

I said sagna was better defending, which isn't even debatable. actually, I can't think of any fullbacks who are on his level defensively.
never said he was anywhere close from an attacking standpoint though, he's rather useless in that regard.
and I think dani alves is brilliant in barcelona's system. I don't think he would suddenly turn to crap if he was in another team, but I can't see him being on the same level if he was constantly under pressure defensively.
not to bring up a premier league/la liga argument, but if he played for a team like arsenal for example, where he would constantly be pressured and tested defensively, I think he'd have trouble coping.

defensively, it's not even close. and there are a number of other fullbacks who I also think are quite a bit better defensively.
lol at not being aware on how good alves was at seville
not that it necessarily means anything, but it shows that he's much more highly rated now with barca ripping anuses apart than he used to be.

Evra > Cole > Clichy > Baines > Assou-ekotto >> Taylor
IMO
He is good but LB is not natural for him and he has been dominated by good wingers

12-12-2011, 02:13 AM #5142Controversial Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is facing an internal investigation and possible disciplinary action after breaching the club's late-night curfew ahead of Monday's Premier League match at Chelsea.
Balotelli was spotted in Manchester curry house Zouk in the early hours of Sunday morning despite club rules stating players must not be out socialising within 48 hours of a game.
The 21-year-old Italian, who was not drinking alcohol, signed autographs, posed for pictures with fellow diners and was involved in a mock sword-fight using rolling pins.

Sagna is most definitely one of the best fullbacks in the world. They play in two different leagues, and in two different systems. Brazilians play as wingbacks, they don't do much defensive cover, they're a overlapping runner, someone who makes runs from deep, more flair, extra body in the attacking area, THATS HOW BRAZIL MAKES THEIR FULLBACKS. Sagna is a rock solid fullback, he is there for his defensive shift, not his attacking.
BUT
The Spanish League is inferior to the English, in Spain its pretty much a two horse race, the physicality there is non-existant compared to England, which is why this man is right. Alvez would not cope well in England. To the outside Alvez looks brilliant because of his attacking contribution and Barcelona's fame. What you fail to realise is Barcelona has the best pressing system in the world, when a player receives a ball, he is pressed by 2 players and a 3rd player blocks his passing options, this in turn helps Alvez tremendously as he is never 1v1 on a player, he is never exposed. In England, Alvez would struggle very much so, he wouldn't have the cover he has now and to play against teams like Stoke or Blackburn who play physically and through set pieces and pace behind the ball, Alvez would look lost. Sagna in Barcelona's team would go unnoticed because his defensive qualities would never be called upon. His attacking game is good, but you'd notice the drop from Alvez to Sagna.
Two different players, in two different systems with two different qualities.
Cliffs:
Sagna > Alvez. Defensively.
Alvez > Sagna. Offensively.

I actually agree with pretty much everything you said - however - I can see that you're new to this thread, and la liga/premier league arguments never end well in here.
so my advice to you would be to give your angus a good peppering and make sure your body is ready for what's about to come. it won't be pretty.

Not a single Philip Lahm was mentioned that day.

I think the last time this was argued I ended up saying that lahm was the best for me from a balanced stand-point. not the best either attacking or defending, but his balance of the two is quite impressive.
as far as who's actually the 'best in the world', I think fullback is a difficult position to have that argument about as there are very different styles of play there, and people tend to have very different opinions on the matter depending on where their biases lie (among other things).

Any doubts about Dani Alves defending should have been put to bed after his last 6-8 games where he has been up against Ronaldo particularly the 4 in last April. I was a doubter of his defending before that now I am not, he is the best full back in the world.
Jose Enrique is the best in the prem IMO (doubt many will agree with me) both Evra and Cole have fallen off alot in the last few years and anyone that says otherwise is either a United or Chelsea fan or just going on their past reputation. Jose Enrique even made Andy Carroll look good at Newcastle last year.

He isn't a bad defender, just saying compared to Sagna defensive wise, Sagna prevails. Also, difference is though, defending against players like Ronaldo is more of anticipation defending, he hasn't really gone up against a physical player.
EG: Koscienly vs Barcelona (on youtube has entire compilation of every touch he had) it shows him having Messi in his pocket the entire game but if you watched him against Birmingham last year, he was clueless. Defenders who are good on the ball are usually those type of defenders who read the game and anticipate better. In contrast if you put somebody like Samba from Blackburn to face Messi, he would be absolutely destroyed as he is more of just a human wall type of player to guard from aerial threats and physical minded players.
Agree completely though, Enrique is class in and out. Upset Arsenal opted with Gibbs/Santos instead of him, he would have slotted in so well. (Baines would give him a good run for his money though)

He is quality I was hoping for him to stay at Newcastle so that he could replace Abidal in a year or two at Barca I'm actually pretty sure that Barcelona were looking at him during the summer before he went to Liverpool. He is very strong, solid and fast plus he is very good technically and going forward, excellent all round full back.
Should be left back for Spain without a doubt, but Duff will destroy him in Gdansk on the 14th of June
