    Smith Machine - NOOB.

I just discovered the smith machine, bit slow eh? lol :P Does this one look good?

I think it'd be really good for me, sometimes I find it hard to bench/squat heavy but with the smith machine it'd always be stable, right? Thanks!

I also was thinking about getting a smith machine, but after searching past threads on the forum, I decided against it. The general consensus was that the smith makes you go in a pre-determined motion, resulting in a better chance of injury since it's not natural.

BINGO, smith machines suck because they are not a natural motion and they restrict you to its path. Thus, resulting in more injuries and less growth in your muscle. Also, smiths dont use your stabilizer muscles which are key to muscle growth and strength gains. This has been said and resaid probably hundreds of times so just get a power rack, a bench, some freeweights and get to lifting

This is what I have and it's great. You can do free weight or use the smith attachment.

LOL, smith machines are not as evil as some here would have you believe. They certainly have their place and can be quite convenient for many exercises. Having said that, I do prefer total free weights over a smith.

Another thing, the smith in that pic has completely vertical uprights, which imo, is not as user friendly as the slanted models you mostly see nowadays. Now, having said that, I have a smith that is very much like the one in the pic. I bought it primarily to do only squats with, and for the lat attachment. I used this machine for about 9mths and have no regrets about purchasing it. I have "graduated" to squatting in a cage, and much to my surprise, I can squat more weight now in a cage. This isn't usually what you'd expect, but it's true.

I'm trying to sell my smith right now, and I'm truly going to miss it when it comes to doing calf raises (very handy for this). It's also great for heavy shrugs.

Again, for me, it was well worth what I paid for it because it got me started doing squats! And I should be able to recoup 75% of what I paid when I sell it.

Wow. That one looks like the rifle rack on the right hand upright is on backwards or upside down or something. It makes my head hurt to look at it.

Yeah, it does at first glance.
.....you can see the rack just has a bad reflection on it if you look closer, it's on right side up (look at the attachment bolts).

    Wish I was 18 again.

I would LOVE to be back at your age, starting out with a nice rack and free weights. Or a gym membership with a trainer that trained with free weights.

When i was 18, i didn't realize how important free weights was, and how machines wasn't as good at building size. When i was that age, the net wasn't around to provide one with such good information.

Not telling you what to do, but at your age, if u was to start a good diet and a good exercise program mainly involving free weights, in a few years, people would be lucky to recognize ya over your current look.

I got to tell ya, when people notice you been doing something, its one heck of a good feeling.

I have an Iron Grip Strenght Smith Machine with free weight rack with spotters to do Barbell work. I Love it. I initially got it for safety as I work out at home alone most commonly. I did a lot of Smith work initially though as my strength improved found that I liked the Barbell Rack better. More natural and my weights went up considerably after doing some of the earlier smith work. Sports Authority has great deals on them.

Thats the main reason I actually looked into it, for safety. I work out at home too and usually alone - I think if I had a smith machine it'd help me be able to lift more without risking an accident to happen.

It certainly does allow for safety. I was able to reestablish strength doing the Smith Machine workouts to the point that the barbell work is much safer now. My set up has spotting hooks so if I cannot get a weight for the final rep I can move it to the spotting hooks easily and get out without injury. They are very nice once you figure out positioning. I do mostly Smith Squats though for the safety of it working out alone. Good luck finding a machine that works well for you. In the long run investing in a good home gym pays off. I paid 899 for my set up on sale from 1199 and figure after the 13 months I have had it, it is down to under 70 bucks per month and dropping each month.

    Take care
