    Does GPA really matter?

Does it really matter in regards to the big picture? I mean obviously you need a good GPA if you are getting a degree for the sole purpose of acquiring a high GPA to go law or medical school, but for all other majors, is there really that much of a difference between a 3,9 and a 3,5 and a 3,0 ? Do employers give a sh!t what comes after the decimal when they're interviewing you? Will it make a difference when you're out there turning your degree into cash?

Yes. Definitely. Some employers have GPA cutoffs where they won't interview below a certain point.

Also, why close doors for yourself? You may want to pursue a Masters/Law/PhD/MD later.

It makes a difference when "getting" interviews, but after that it's not that important. It's really easy for employers to use GPA to screen applicants, but just because one has a high GPA doesn't mean they will be right for the job.

I graduated with a 2.9 in ECE and had no issues getting a job at a top tier company in my field. Btw most companies highly frown upon applicants without internships, co-ops, or other types of job experiences. IMO from what ive seen at my company at least, experience and what you know > Gpa. We've turned down a bunch of 3.9 grad students in favor for 3.0 students with more/better experience. High Gpa may get you into the door but doesn't guarantee anything.

I have yet to see one company that comes to our school who will hire, or let alone let you intern for free without atleast a 3.0 gpa. This is for engineering though, so my information is limited to that field. In fact, alot of company's wont even let you get into the screening process here if your gpa is sub-par. The first thing I have always been asked is "what is your gpa?" before doing an interview. Shell has a 3.2 cutoff, chevron is a 3.0, phillips is a 3.0-3.5 depending on which job you are applying for, and the majority are like this. I am not saying that you cannot get a job, but the salary is a huge difference.

it certainly helps. and if it helps to at least get an interview - then it is certainly worth it. anything below a 3.0 IMO has ALWAYS been discredited.

some sectors look in to it more than others.. some view it as a measure of intelligence, some as a measure of hard work.

but IMO, once you are in the door (interview), the GPA is out the window. you can have a 4.0, but lack people skills, and you won't have a shot (again depending on sector).

i didn't have the best GPA (3.4) - but if I got a shot (interview), I was always in the running.... in fact. 2/2 for jobs I wanted. 2/3 in reality, but I tanked one interview b/c I hated the Manager.

    Yes. U mirin' my 3.1? I'd have at least a 3.5 of I never Misc'ed.

Also, having a high GPA and putting in 100% effort into your school work will make you stand out and a lot of major-related professors will provide opportunities for resume experience to you if they see that you work hard (srs). You need to do both, not just enough to keep your grades up.

    again. it helps.

but I played baseball in college while a full time engineering student.

and I had zero experience. and had no trouble finding a job.. the first wasn't in the sector I wanted, but a year later, I found one..

in my experience, HOW YOU PRESENT YOURSELF is the biggest factor once you have landed an interview.

My point is, there is no downside to having a high GPA. You're studying to learn and to succeed, so why not put effort in to your classes? It can only help.

This is exactly what I mean, there are so many other ways to land an interview than having a high GPA and just about tripling your study time, you could use that time to acquire experience instead and at the end you will have gained more

Yes, an applicant with a lower GPA and more experience will beat the guy with the higher GPA quite often. Now put two applicants with roughly equal work/project experience against each other, but one has a GPA higher by a noticeable amount. Now you have your answer.

    its about balance, brah.

if you have a shaky GPA - you need something to offset it, like experience.

if you have no experience - you need something to offset it, like a high GPA.

ideally, a good gpa and some experience is best. it really is up to the employer that's highering where their priorities/emphasis lie.

This is a very good point. An employer with good judgement is going to know how much work goes into certain types of degrees and jobs. They know what it is they're looking for in an employee. They research these things before they hire people. A good employer is not going to risk relying on an employee who only looks good on paper. The whole moral is whether you're trying to push experience in the field or experience through education, do not be a lazy piece of crap -- stack your resume as much as you can to ensure that you have less chance of losing a job opportunity.

Also truth. Once you have a few years of work and a performance history to point at nobody gives 2 sh*ts about your GPA.
