Gaming - Waste of time and $?
Anybody feel like as they are playing they are wasting their time that they could be using to be outside, working on your car, out with friends, with your girlfriend etc etc. Ive been a gamer all my life and theres times where i feel like i could be doing something productive. keep in my mind i have a job that pays good and i go to school and i have a clingy gf. i dont hang out with my friends as much as i would like but it doesnt bother me that much.
anyway ive been thinking of building a gaming cpu since ive been a consoler my whole life and i know this will take a good chunk of money and time out of my life. just wondering if anyone feels that they are wasting their youth playing video games or not.

Its all how you decide to spend your free time. I was thinking like that too before and tried to quit gaming but i would just end up watching TV instead, or browsing the internet. Its just another way to kill free time. As long as you are not addicted to MMOs and most of the time can put a game down whenever you need to do something else, gaming is perfectly fine.

Its a hobby, if you enjoy it, do it.
Most of my friends who arent gamers just sit around with their wives and watch ****ty TV shows and drink beer and eat ice cream all night.

not if you play recreationally. I only put in about 8 hours a week when a new game comes out and about 4 during the summer.

gaming is what i do when i have nothing else to do, so i do it purely to waste time. if i had better things to be doing, i'd probably do them, but i enjoy kicking ass on cod & battlefield and will continue to do so

I guess it really depends on how much time you actually spend gaming, and whether or not it impacts your life negatively...i.e. you can't find a job because you spend 10+ a day gaming.
I find myself gaming only in the evening, usually within hours of going to bed. Just a time killer.

srsly thought this last night, and it was a sobering thought thinking that I might have to give gaming up to be more productive (kinda got addicted over the summer, trying to ween myself off). Figured I'd play games I can play at my own pace for a while, mostly single player time killers, so I don't feel compelled to play a lot so I can compete with others online. I get addicted to the competitiveness.

gaming gets a bad stigma because no1 likes the stereotypical gaming nerd
u see a man who skateboarded for 8 hours a day, ppl will be like wow u are determined
a man who games 8 hours a day is a straight waste of life lol
even tho both are hobbies and neither is necessarily better than the other.

for real. if e-sports ever takes off the world will be a better place.
on sunday i do nothing but talk about football (total waste of time) to my family and friends but if i pulled that **** with gaming i'd be labeled a nerd etc.
as far as im concerned gaming is a very cheap form of entertainment.

Top Starcraft players are making good money + sponsorships up the ass
The first place team at the Dota 2 tournament a few months ago won a million USD. (200k for each member of the team)
This is probably just the beginning.

No. I see alot of people do stuff that I consider a waste of time(football watching, drinking, etc). I game in the evenings when I have spare time.
I work, go to school and do other stuff. I enjoy my gaming hobby

I figure I work hard enough being a slave for corporate America. If I wanna gel and enjoy time in a virtual world why not? Definitely not a waste of time. As long as you're working or going to school or doing something with yourself you've earned the right to spend some of your free time gaming.

Can't wait to be king
I work 20+ hours a week and am a full time student, I workout, I go hard on the weekends at parties. When I'm in my room and have some time to unwind, I have no problem playing video games. I don't care what anyone else thinks of my hobbies. If they have the time to criticize what I do, then their life can't be any better.

Theres a big difference between skating and gaming. Thats like saying playing basketball and gaming are the same.
You just cant let gaming take over your life, gaming has its way of taking control over some people. It happened to me when I was 15 with halo 2 me and my buddies got addicted to that game and spent hours upon hours playing. Then I woke up one day and was like wtf? and just quit.
At the end of the day everyone is different and everyone lives a different way. Just because you enjoy gaming doesnt mean thats all you do. I enjoy gaming but I also enjoy sports(playing and watching),skateboarding, lifting weights, drinking, partying, hanging with friends, music etc etc.....with gaming coming after everything else.
I kind of dont like when people bring up the people who do actually make a living gaming because its such a small percentage but I understand where they are coming from.Gaming to me is something that comes behind everything else .
I find it kind of sad that you hear about these people who get addicted to world of warcraft and play it every spare second they have, theres just much more to life than games. But like I said before everyone is different, people game on different levels and people choose what they want to do.

I feel you OP. Lately I've felt the same. Also, games just haven't been as fun as they used to be. After I beat Gears 3's campaign a few more times I'm only going to buy Zelda and Mario major console games. But even Super Mario Galaxy 2 didn't impress me one bit despite it's outstanding scores from all over the gaming world.
If I didn't have friends that went to my school to play xbox live with then I'd just quit that garbage entirely. Video games are too easy these days and nothing has impressed me in a long time. I'm pretty sure video games have just sucked for the most part these past 4-5 years but it could be that we're growing out of them.

Gaming is a hobby just like anything else. This is what people who look down on gaming don't understand. Sure it's a waste of time but so is watching sports, painting, drinking, playing piano, dancing, making photo albums, playing jenga or any of the other pointless sh!t people do. It's only really an issue if it takes over your life, which is why I don't play MMOs anymore. But it's no worse than the other ways people spend their freetime. I don't really see gaming as equal to skating/playing sports but that's just because I think e-sports/MLG are queer as hell. If it's your life goal to play StarCraft in Korea then by all means go for it.

It used to be a waste for me when I was younger. I would spend multiple hours everyday playing games. Kind of grown out of it now, I play maybe like 3 hours a week, and only if I have nothing else to do, which is pretty rare.

Theres a big difference between skating and lifting. Thats like saying playing basketball and lifting are the same.
You just cant let lifting take over your life, lifting has its way of taking control over some people. It happened to me when I was 15 when I wanted to look better - me and my buddies got addicted to the gym and spent hours upon hours lifting and cooking. Then I woke up one day and was like wtf? and just quit.
At the end of the day everyone is different and everyone lives a different way. Just because you enjoy lifting doesnt mean thats all you do. I enjoy lifting but I also enjoy other [wastes of time which are fun].....with lifting coming after everything else.
I kind of dont like when people bring up the people who do actually make a living lifting because its such a small percentage but I understand where they are coming from. lifting to me is something that comes behind everything else .
I find it kind of sad that you hear about these people who get addicted to the gym and they're there every spare second they have, theres just much more to life than working out. But like I said before everyone is different, people exercise on different levels and people choose what they want to do.
Fixed that for you. I wouldnt even call myself a gamer, but your analogy is bullsht. Both are things that waste time for fun. One has a more socially positive reward, but its the same thing when you look at it. People can be "addicted" to anything they enjoy in an unhealthy way...

if you are enjoying your time spent, is it a waste?
Yes... come and let us make an end of it. It matters not, even cornered, to my last breath... I remain who and what I am. I will not hide, nor tremble, nor beg. Let them come and reckon with fury that is DOOM defiant.
