Seated Calf raise with smith machine....safe or not?

    Hey All -

So, for the past month or so I've been doing seated calf raises using a smith machine. I have an aerobic step that I put under the bar, I sit on a bench, and let the bar (with padding) rest on my knees, and push out reps to get a nice pump in my calves. Would there be any chance of such a plane of motion, blowing out my knees?

Lots of people do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3CgN8K4E_w

What do you think? and OK exercise?

Totally fine, you can just add padding, on your legs, the heavier you get.

They look great. Agreed with rutzilla. I'd do them if I didn't have a seated calf raise machine.

Just be sure to set the "fail-safe" stops (that just about all Smith machines have) so that if your knees get pushed out from under the bar, it doesn't crash down on your feet.

You may, however, find it becomes very 'uncomfortable' on your knees by the time you work up to enough weight to really work your calves thoroughly.

Does your gym not have a generic Seated Calf machine?

These look great, I am def going to give these a whirl on my next leg day.

My gym has no seated calf raisers, so I think this could be a great replacement. I've been going heavy heavy on calf raisers using a leg press and a calf specific machine they have, but nothing seated.

Does anyone else get groin discomfort with the seated ones? I find standing is the only way I can get a good workout. My old gym used to have a standing calf machine with shoulder pads which was great, now I just hold plates on a step.

You'll never be able to get your calves to grow by holding plates. At least use a barbel dude =)
