Onboard Realtek. Sound cards are irrelevant unless your running a 5.1 or 7.1 speaker system. And Headphones > Surround sound for FPS games anyways...you can hear every footstep. You cant with speakers.
I have an old Audigy 4 Pro i bought long long ago, i may throw it in and use it some day...

I have a pair of Sennheiser 528s and I can't hear teh footsteps. That's why I wanted a soundcard. Maybe my game settings are off? Do you set headphones for mono?

Have you checked your audio settings? Mine was set to Mono or something by default but was working in Stereo so dunno...i set it to War Tapes. You still cant hear a lot of foot steps but it makes it much easier to pick out directional sound from gun fire.

In game settings or in control panel?

Lol, on board sound is trash. The thing is, until you try a sound card that's actually good you probably don't have a clue.

Nice, I need to upgrade my sound card, I'm tired of this crappy steel series usb one and the support for my X fi platinum sucks when it comes to windows 7.

Keep telling yourself that, Sound cards used to be more viable when processing sound actually took a sizable amount CPU cycles and could slow your computer down. So you reduced that CPU drain by putting in a sound card that did its own.
We dont have Pentium 400hz anymore, the true benefit of a discreet sound card is gone.
Unless like i said you are running higher end speakers, a pair of ****ty 100 dollar creative/logitech speakers aren't going to be able to gain any benefit from a 200+ dollar sound card. And i dont think i have to explain why headphones can never approach the quality of real speakers due to their small drivers.
But for PC gaming, Headphones will always be superior unless you have some super sound proof room with amazing speakers.

Can someone explain what a better sound card does? I have a $250 bose 2.1 setup (got for free) and logitech g330 headphones, what would i gain from a better sound card?

brb returning video tapes
Almost all motherboards these days have more than decent onboard hd audio, if you're buying a sound card for gaming then I'd like to introduce you to these things called headphones.
Actually I'd go as far as to say the people saying you should get a sound card for things like music are listening to mp3s still. Don't listen to these people, save your money and buy hookers instead

i am not an expert audio brah and i could tell a significant difference between onboard sound and a card.
i recently got a Xi-fi titanium card because i saw it for $45 on Dell's ebay page.
gat damn huge difference. i have the Astro Headphones/Mixamp and this card blows away the mixamp, i thought the astro headphones just had ****ty bass but this new card actually gives them a good amount of bass. went from zero bass on the mixamp to nice clean crisp bass, not that ****ty overpowered license plate rattling bass.
i now run my xbox audio through my PC to use the sound card for processing... so much better than the mixamp, now i just need to replace the Astro headphones with something better... i'm thinking Senn HD555's or something in that price range.
