UPDATE/ BREAKING NEWS: KELLY RYAN PAROLES ON FIRST CHARGE; BEGINS SERVING TIME ON 2nd

Former IFBB pro-fitness competitor Kelly Ryan, who has been incarcerated since 2005 for her role in the death of Melissa James, went before the Nevada State Parole Board last week for consideration of parole on the first of two charges that netted possible incarceration time of three to 13 years.

A first appearance before the board was unsuccessful two years ago, but yesterday parole was granted on the first charge of "battery with use of deadly weapon resulting in substantial harm." Ryan will now begin serving time on the second charge of arson - a mandatory three years - beginning January 2012.

The two charges were part of an Alford plea that summarily swept her role in the murder component under the rug in exchange for Craig Titus' plea of murder. In an Alford plea, a criminal defendant does not admit guilt of an act, but admits the prosecution could likely prove their case, and accepts guilt for lesser charges as part of a plea deal.

She will be eligible for parole again in 2015.

Had to laugh at the Ron Popiel slogan!

Someone earlier said "of course she'll get out in 2015." I actually agree, given that that is just an arson charge with no attachment to bodily harm. She did not parole on this one the first time around, but did this time.

I hope the board considered the Alford plea and what actually precipitated it (Uhhhh... a woman was brutally murdered???).. but perhaps they are not allowed to know the original arrest record/ charge - only what is before them. Not sure.

Should be interesting to see if she tries to come back to the only world she knows. If she's smart, she'll do a Casey Anthony and just disappear.

    Ya true

On another note, I get the feeling she was the brains behind this crime, and Titus helped her. Even when he was admitting it, it seemed like he did it to help her and took the blame on himself. That is how it looked on video at least.

Either way their both guilty. I think they should both spend life in prison.

im a cop, and im digusted of what she did, but then again i dont have proof beyond a reasonable doubt to say she personally killed her, she orbitrated the murder, it was her idea, she planned it.

it could of been an argument turned into something, craig went and ended her life, she freaked out and let craig mastermind the fail disposing of the body attempt and her with a weak and nervous mind just went along with it.

right now as it is with everything i know, i cant sentence her with a murder charge, i wount sleep at night.

Ron Avidan: How did you propose to her?

Craig Titus: I used a line from the movie Jerry MacGuire. But first I went to her father, who could not stand me, because of my background. Her father is a CEO of an advertising company, who actually worked for David Pecker, the chairman of AMI and Weider, and talks to him sometimes. It was after the 2000 Ironman, after the show, when I told her father in the parking lot that I wanted to marry Kelly. He said absolutely not, no way. But it took a little bit of convincing, I finally talked him into it.
    Should have taken daddy's advice.

Agree on one hand, she should have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder though, people have been charged with even less evidence than was against her.

it wasnt a murder wasnt it? i thought it was a manslaughter, and u cant get charged with conspiracy when its a manslaughter, cuz manslaughter is the unexpected death from a sudden event that was not pre-planed to have death as the desired result..

didnt she die as a resut of the fight or something, then she was dumped in car already dead and burnt?

i dont remember the case much, refresh my mind to get a better understanding to lazy to google

Kelly Ryan pleaded guilty to arson and Nevada’s equivalent of no contest to battery with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 6 to 26 years. The plea allowed Kelly Ryan to avoid trial and avoid the murder charge.

Kelly Ryan was only convicted of battery with a deadly weapon and arson.

The story went or goes that she did not kill but aided in the events but was not in the right state of mind emotionally or physically to make the right decisions <rolls eyes>.

Titus took the wrap for the 2nd degree murder charge and was also charged with kidnapping and arson. The Plea allowed Titus to avoid the trial and the death penalty. He was sentenced to 21-51 years and is eligible for parole in 2026. He claimed the murder was a result of his drug use that got out of control.

Prosecutor Robert Daskas said Melissa James was beaten, drugged, stunned with a Taser, injected with morphine and strangled before she was “burned beyond anybody’s recognition” in the trunk of Ryan’s Jaguar. James’ head was encased in duct tape, and showed the court graphic photos of a “death mask” formed by her face when it peeled away with the heavy tape during her autopsy.

Titus admitted to having an affair with Melissa James.

    =(

Here is a full detailed and very interesting video from 2009 on the initial mystery/investigation of the murder if anyone is interested in the full story.

oh ok, so she was alive b4 burnt, then yeah thats murder..
but here let me explain to u how the wiseguys at the DA work... they work based on stats, gain their reputation from their stats, just getting a conviction on titus for murder already is cream of the crop for them, and if letting kelly go with her sentence was what it took then they did it.

i got 2 guys stealing a wearhouse , huge deal. i had to tase 1, anyway, they went down with aggravated assault on a LEO, aggravated battery on a leo, unoccupied burglury, possesion of crime tools.. but the one guy who i had to tase and in my opinion was the worst of the 2, made a plea bargain that he knew about more serious gang related crimes his partner had commited, and the da wanted the gang related convictions over a simple burglary.. guy got out with 3 yrs probation..

No dig on you brah or your profession, I have a few cop friends out here too but the whole justice and political system in North America is corrupt...first thing I always think of when I hear stuff like this murder and what you said above is...

And if anyone thinks Kelly Ryan is getting off easy I can almost guarantee you that she would have already been out if this happened in Canada, our system is incredibly soft on murder.

i dont make the laws, the government does that, i dont interpret the laws, the courts do that... i just enforce them

people have this misconception thinking that the courts and police are some sore of unified partnership... district attorneys hate us, and well.. most of us hate them 2. because ill be in jail waiting room/lobby writin my arrest form and the guy i brought in 1 hr ago is already out and waving bye @ me..

i can arrest u and get creative and book u for 4000 charges, but what i write is just what pertains to the arrest not whats gona stay.. some fresh grad lawyer at the da office will sit there and decide what he likes

Agree, Titus took the wrap and he should be the one getting parole in 2015 not Kelly, this was a clear case of manslaughter though.

When u knock someone out and throw em in a car "alive" then burn the person to death.. Thats murder bossman

Manslaughter would of been if she died as a result from being pushed or punched then she fell hit her head against the floor and died.

You could claim manslaughter because they were under the influence and were unable to make sound descisions,

For example in a case of dangerous driving causing death, the defendant was found guilty of only the lesser charge of negligent driving causing death because he was not aware of what he was doing, he was not in control of his actions and in fact could not even remember getting in the car - he was simply too drunk to remember any of it. If Kelly Ryan had been clean she would most likely not have killed James. These guys needed stronger lawyers - thats all I am saying, they had a weak defence.

The judges dont care how drunk or drugged up you are 99 percent of the time, they actually look at you even worse when you claim that in court. Smart Lawyers will tell you not to use that as an excuse cause it will screw you even further. The fact that BOTH of them were togethor after the murder an ready to flee to greece speaks volumes of guilt on both of them. Is what it is though.

lol what a fuking joke there are guys on measly drug charges getting 10 years plus, then when you murder someone your out before them complete bull**** they should execute all murderers, rapists, peado's if the evidence is overwhelming and there should be common sense in trials some guy in the uk killed a robber who broke into his house and got sent down for years for it what a joke. if i was in charge all drugs decriminalised like in portugal then you cut crime in half and save billions of dollers. crimes like raping baby's would get you a live torture on national television to send a message out to ****'s if they saw a man being forced to use his cock as a straw to eat his own insides while being kept awake on adrenalin they might think twice about commiting such evil. fuk i should be president

Agree with you on the porugal deal, but recently a guy in the USA was executed for a crime millions belived he did not commit. Agree with you in some ways that the law is lop sided. In my country a man gets more jail time for serious corporate fraud than for rape or murder. BUT all should be proven beyond any reasonable doubt + lack of rehabilitation potential.

exactly man i'm talking about hard evidence though if you literally have a video of a guy murdering someone or have hundreds of eye witnesses then the death penalty should be mandatory the way it is at the moment there's no common sense at all they just label a murder as a murder weather it be protecting your family or just doing it for sick self pleasure.

right now as it is with everything i know, i cant sentence her with a murder charge, i wount sleep at night.

ZRage, you know as well as anyone in any branch of criminal justice that an Alford Plea only allowed her to skirt harsher, more serious consequences in a plea deal. Keep in mind, she was not CLEARED of anything, nor guilty of LESS in the court's eyes.

The Alford plea only means that the accused stipulates that she would LIKELY BE CONVICTED of that bigger charge (in this case, murder) were she to actually be tried and convicted. Accepting an Alford plea means the accused agrees there is enough evidence to support a murder conviction, but opts for it in order to receive less time, and usually in exchange for something the prosecution wants more. In this case, Craig - whom the prosecution was convinced was more culpable.

Had she been convicted by a jury of her peers, she could have been inside much, much longer. She got the break of a lifetime, considering at the least, she either goaded this murder (at Craig's hands) by making up stories about Melissa stealing from them (which law enforcement say they never proved) or that Melissa was trying to kill them (by lacing water glasses with morphine), or at most, partially/ fully participated by beating her up and injecting her (which is the likely scenario in either case).

The likelihood of her NOT paroling on a lame, innocuous arson charge three years from now is slim. Let's hope she has the grace to avoid any haunt, industry or person she ever knew before. Hanging around the industry would be callous, to say the least.

She was on top of the world when this happen. We have all made mistakes and have been forgiven. Sometimes life happens and tough times make you a better person. What ever was her part she is doing her time. It would be nice to see her come back and kick ass all over again.
