Thumb pain and swelling on bench press?

When I am on the bench press, I get this bizzarre pain in my right thumb, right at the very base of the thumb muscle before it hits the wrist. This spot rapidly develops a swollen ball under the skin even after just a few reps and it drives me nuts. Even at low weight (135lbs) It hurts like hell. Pushups do not give me the same problem. I've tried taking time off, resting it for a few weeks, etc, but no luck. What's odd is that other exercises that stress the wrists, like overhead press and dips and such, do not hurt this area at all.

Any ideas what this is, how to prevent it, or how to get a good chest workout if I cannot do bench presses?

    Bump because bump.

No literally, I have a bump and it hurts like balls! Now my overhead press has gotten above 100 pounds, I feel the same pain in my hand when doing an overhead press. this is limiting my progress and is very uncomfortable. has anyone run into this before?

If you're benching with your thumbs under the bar, grip the bar with your thumbs around the bar instead.
Also keep your wrists as straight as possible, meaning not with your palms toward the ceiling.

I do wrap my hands around the bar.

I was thinking that it may be helpful to take an anti-inflammatory before the gym (naproxen maybe) to help with this symptom. I don't like my body telling me what to do!

I will play with my hand position next time and see if it helps. Thanks, and rep'd!
