Idk, but I take it everyday during my workout, and sip it on offdays. It's helped maintain muscle and get my strength up while cutting I think. Although I have been eating a gram of protein per BW and hve been training hard, but its definately helped.

Itll help when you have an extreme calorie deficit and you train a long time away from your last meal. Other than that its pretty useless.

Some research has been done, though it's admittedly small-sample. Intra-training BCAA supplementation is, apparently, far less useful than immediate post-workout amino supplementation (which you'd of course get from your protein shake), plus further BCAA supplementation after that shake's digested and mostly through the system, as whey tends to course through within an hour.

I can't post the link, since I have less than 50 posts, but so I'll quote from the American Journal of Physiology:

"Branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) or a placebo was given to seven subjects during 1 h of ergometer cycle exercise and a 2-h recovery period. Intake of BCAA did not influence the rate of exchange of the aromatic amino acids, tyrosine and phenylalanine, in the legs during exercise or the increase in their concentration in muscle. The increase was ∼30% in both conditions. On the other hand, in the recovery period after exercise, a faster decrease in the muscle concentration of aromatic amino acids was found in the BCAA experiment (46% compared with 25% in the placebo condition). There was also a tendency to a smaller release (an average of 32%) of these amino acids from the legs during the 2-h recovery. The results suggest that BCAA have a protein-sparing effect during the recovery after exercise, either that protein synthesis has been stimulated and/or protein degradation has decreased, but the data during exercise are too variable to make any conclusions about the effects during exercise. The effect in the recovery period does not seem to be mediated by insulin."

Hope that helps. I was curious myself.

For what it's worth, once I started sipping BCAA's throughout my workout, I no longer "hit the wall". The difference was immediate and has never tapered off, so I've stuck with the practice. I consume BCAA's like my life depends on it, in addition to whole food and protein shakes. Adding the BCAA's has absolutely cut down on the recovery time I needed prior to supplementing with them. In my mind, they are at least as important as whey protein.

how many grams of BCAA do you supplement with intra-workout? and what do you mean you no longer "hit the wall"? do you think i get the same benefits that you do by taking it just pre-workout?

I sip 10g worth of BCAA's during my workout. Before I started doing this, I would get to that point each workout where I'd simply run out of gas and my workouts were suffering due to that. Sipping the BCAA's throughout each session gives me plenty of drive. My last exercise is just as intense as my first, whereas before it was a real struggle to keep going.

As for the benefits of drinking them during as opposed to before your workout? I dunno, dude. I drink them before, during and after, so it's tough for me to say. You're a big boy, give them a try and tell me what you come up with!

Do it for sure pre workout

Take BCAA 30-45 minutes before your workout. You want to use less muscle as possible during your workouts. Once your glycogen stores are depleted your start using fat and muscle as fuel after about 45 minutes into an intense workout. The BCAA help with muscles not breaking down as much. People say it's useless and I say listen to science
