LONDON — It is the nation that once ran the largest empire the world has ever known, a country so powerful that it claimed to "rule the waves" in a patriotic anthem.
But last month a "political tsunami" struck the United Kingdom and this once-mighty state faces being broken up.
An astonishing victory for nationalists in the Scottish parliamentary elections means it is almost certain that a referendum will be held within five years on whether Scotland should leave the U.K. and become an independent country.

Scotland is already a country. Just a member of the UK. Not ruled by England as some see this to be.

If that's what they want.
Combined, the UK is a economic, military and political power house. If they want to leave that then that's their choice.
Can Scotland stand alone on their own 2 feet without aid from England? probably not.
Scotland already takes billions from England yearly.

I'm Scottish, yeah looking like we might be independent one day if it goes to a vote. I'd rather we stayed part of the UK though, strength in numbers and we'd need to sort out things like defence and the oil wealth.

According to the BBC radio this morning, Scotland has more people on benefits then in work.
Scotland has oil, but nowhere near enough to make this work.
