There was a story today of a guy that spent 3 days in the surf with a metal detector looking for random stuff. He finds a $7,000 diamond wedding ring and gives it back. What would you do?

How did he know who it belonged to?
If there was a lady standing there crying obviously i would give it back."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. We make ourselves into one or the other."-- Carlos Castaneda

From what the story says, a KY couple came down here, she lost her ring in the surf. They apparently hired this guy, but they didn't sit there and watch him. He could have easily found it, put it in his pocket and said 'nope..didnt find it'...then got paid an had a 7k ring to boot.
I think I would have given it back. If nothing else for the karma. I'm probably running a karma deficit anyway

Well yeah, if I was hired to find it of course I'd give it back. Honestly, I wouldn't have even thought to keep it after taking money to find it. And, of course, as Crup said, if there's some distraught chick looking for her ring 50 yards away from me and I find it I'd certainly give it back.
That said, had I not been hired to find something and I happened across anything valuable washed up on the beach or I found it while snorkeling I'm not going to post "found" posters and put ads in the paper. I would sooo keep it. Too much romance surrounding a situation like that not to keep it...the sea giving up it's treasures and what not. I mean, how pimp would it be to come home from a nice dive, get down on one knee in front of your wife, ask her to marry you again and present this phattie ring that Poseidon himself bestowed upon you.No one raindrop believes it is to be blamed for the flood. -anonymous

No brainer from my perspective....
I would take absolutely no pleasure in keeping the ring.
On the other hand...I would take great pleasure seeing the joy on the faces of my client.
Whatever one decides in this case is a reflection of personal character and integrity.

Just an old guy trying to keep up his rhythm chops.
