I was just watching the '87 Olympia and he stood out big time. He was the only one Haney didn't dwarf. Gaspari, Strydom and de Mey may have had him in conditioning, but Love completely out-massed them.
I love those cuts at the top of his chest. Troy Alves has similar ones:

I used to train at Ron's gym for several years including 1986. Ron was a big dude, but also kind to a fault. I recall one of the owners of Powerhouse Gym #1 back then, Will Dabish, showing some visitors around the gym. One of the visitors was a young guy that was impressed by the size of Will's arms. Will looked down at the kid and smiled, and then said, "Hey listen, you wanna' see a big arm? I'll show you a big arm..." Will looks up, scans the gym floor, and yells, "Hey Ron, show the kid what real guns look like!" Ron walks up to the group, pulls back his sleeve, and blows everyone away with a single arm bicep shot. The kid's jaw just hit the floor. Will just sat back grinning at the one of the homegrown beasts of the gym. And I looked down at my then 14 or 15 inch arms thinking, "...dayuummm..."

LOL...thanks, man.
Yeah, it was a good time, to be sure - I've definitely grown to appreciate it more and more. IMO, the scene in the midwest and east coast didn't reach the high watermark of the S. California gym environment in the 80s and 90s, but it was still highly motivating and had its own distinct personality. For instance, the original Powerhouse Gym used to have a boxing ring right next to the gym equipment. So, we not only saw Ron train, but we had the Kronk Boxing Team - featuring guys like Milton McCrory and Tommy Hearns - pay us a few visits. So seeing the fighters along with the weightlifters was not unusual. Again, it was nothing flashy, but you were always in the right mindset to train hard once you entered those gym doors..."First train the mind, then the body."
