Question Coffee people, need suggestions please

I keep reading about all the great benefits of coffee. I love the smell but hate the taste of the regular stuff. I had a GF that while I was dating got me in to drinking this flavored stuff that came in a rectangular can. Don't remember the name. Probably some 'foo-foo' stuff. Everyone in my family is massively religious. If they saw a coffee maker in my house, they would probably flip out. So I don't do or say anything in front of them they would consider offensive (yes it would be bad if I did). Is there anything out there that tastes decent, lets me heat up water, and add the coffee stuff to?

There are plenty of instant coffees on the market. I don't care for them, but they're available. Most of the major mass market coffee makers make a coffee crystal. If you're convinced that you should drink the instant garbage, Folger's is cheap & inoffensive. They also make a teabag coffee - steeps like tea, is coffee. No mess, no percolator. You can also just make coffee out of ground beans in a saucepan (or kettle).

If you don't like the taste of coffee how about tea? There are lots of great teas available. If I didn't like coffee I certainly wouldn't drink it.

That's interesting. I had absolutely no notion that coffee was prohibited by any religion. Do you have a notion as to why?

Not sure why. They do have a set of dietary guidelines that (at a minimum) prohibit use of alcohol & tobacco, as well as a specific injunction against "hot drinks" which is colloquially understood to include coffee.

The town I live in doesn't even have a coffeeshop. You can get a decent cup at the diner, but the closest good coffeeshop is in the next town over.

Phi is correct - caffeinated beverages are not actually sold at BYU (including Coke or whatever). They actually sell a caffeine-free Coke here, if you can believe it.

I've been pondering this for years. It isn't. Also, the Utah economy would grind to a screeching halt without Diet Coke. The injunction seems to only apply to coffee & non-herbal teas.

Finals week must be hell for some of their students. Most people I know live at the library on finals week/the week before. Never understood why people don't just keep up with sh!t so they don't have to cram so hard or why they think that they will retain even half of the information they are pouring over for 8 straight hours.

They say coffee has caffeine in it and violates their word of wisdom (WOW). To be honest IDK if it says anything like that, I just don't argue. Never looked it up. I do know they frown on caffeine in sodas too. My family is also big time in to alternative stuff. They take it too far IMO, they disregard medical stuff or science and go to their local mormon chiropractor, for everything. I'm the black sheep in that regards and if anything every happens to me medically, then it will be because I didn't live that lifestyle. Some of the religious talk I hear is pretty batsht insane. I say nothing so they don't all jump me at family gatherings. They told me I was going to hell too (yes srs ).

You would probably be better of going with tea or some other herbal drink.

Caffeinated drinks are not against the Word of Wisdom. It is a myth based on an extrapolation from the Word of Wisdom which says not to drink coffee. It must be bad because of caffeine therefore...It's nonsense. However, it is suggested that people not get addicted to any substance such as caffeinated drinks, over the counter drugs, or anything else for that matter. Science and common sense are supposed to be used to make decisions regarding health however the Word of Wisdom has specific things it suggests that are beneficial and things that should be avoided (coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs). No specific reasons are ever given only that God said to avoid them (given in the early 1800's). Any thoughts as to why is speculation.

The misconception about caffeinated drinks is fairly common especially with people in small towns or those people that take things too far (i.e. I can think of a few relatives). As to you going to hell they had to be joking. No Mormon who truly understands his religion would say this. First of all the concept of heaven and hell is one of the big differences with other Christians in that there isn't a heaven or hell concept as you would typically think of it. Second of all drinking coffee isn't that big of deal per say, relatively speaking. However, abstaining from it is a requirement for temple worship so in that sense it is important.
