Yoga - Time invested? Or Time wasted

I have been looking in to the p90x program, and seen that Yoga is a very crucial part in it. I am open minded, so can understand that if it works for these guys - it can work for anybody, given the right attitude and commitment.

My question is this though. In your personal experiences, do you feel Yoga has been a good time investment (For example, Yoga x is about an hour and a half) in your workout, and what benefits have you personally felt from investing this time in it?

    Thanks

In addition to my workout routine, I do yoga 2-3 times/week. The classes are typically an hour, and they're anything from Basic Yoga I, to intermediate level. I'm 36, and I started taking yoga about five months ago. I have a female friend who is a yoga instructor, and she had been mentioning all the great benefits. I'll admit, I think it's great to do, if you have the time to fit it in. I've noticed increased core strength, and flexibility. Not to mention it's a great sweat, and somewhat "peaceful". I'd recommend it, and most studios will give you a week or two, trial period. Can't hurt to try it.

Depends on your genetics and current flexibility. Rippetoe says that you should be able to get all of you stretching in when doing squats or whatever. I have crap for flexibility, so I cannot rely on this method. So I do yoga for flexibility. In addition other types of Yoga helps "tone" your body so you burn calories a bit quicker. Yoga is such a broad term, so if you have a goal in mind, look into the different types and figure out which one will be beneficial.

Notice: toning in the sense of muscle fiber tension and not the aesthetic kind.

Yoga is good, but don't do the bullsh*t corporatized yoga they offer at main gyms. Go to an actual yoga studio for your yoga, or do it yourself.

Oh, and I'll listen to Mark Rippetoe's "get all your stretching from olympic lifting" nonsense when he shows me one of his guys doing a full split, touching his head to his knees, holding a lotus, bridging his back so tightly that his ass touches the back of his head etcetera.

Yoga is great. I started doing it recently, and so far the results are awesome. It really has helped me with my lifting form, since I am more aware of my posture and muscle activation during lifts. I'd say it's a complete life-changer for me, but YMMV. It may seem goofy/hard at first, but it's an insane workout, especially once you try the harder stuff.

I did yoga for years and enjoyed it. It helped my flexibility tremendously. Made a lot of lifts easier.

Stretching can help with recovering muscles, keeping them healthy. Some postures are better than others for people with different needs. Once you get good you can do more intense postures which are more challenging and spend less time on (yeah kinda wasteful) poses that don't challenge you.
